Swiss motorcycle documents required for sale

An English friend as died suddenly, leaving a holiday home and a motorcycle in Switzerland. His widow has returned to England permanently and has asked us to sell everything.

We have the keys to the motorbike but no documentation. She may have the paperwork in England amongst a whole box of assorted papers but neither us nor her know what we need.

Please can someone tell us the names of the documents we require and where we can obtain generic pictures of the front covers to help her identify them. We would be most grateful for any assistance you can offer.

Re: Swiss motorcycle documents required for sale

Fahrzeugausweis / Permis de Circulation.

It is "gray": Hence the French name "Carte gris" or gray card in English.

Here an example: https://www.gr.ch/DE/institutionen/v...n/default.aspx

The gray card might be under the seat of the bike or in the late husbands motorcycle gear/jacket.

If completely lost, the widow might request a duplicate from the StVA/SAN of the canton where it was last registered.

Be aware, that unlike in the UK, the license plate does not stay with the vehicle. As long as the plate is not returned to the authorities insurance and road tax has to be paid.

I assume you also need a paper from the widow that she became the owner by heritage, and a second paper in where she allows you to act on her behalf as for selling the bike.

Optional, not legally needed. Although it might be requested from a potential buyer. I once bought such a bike, and did indeed a little background check (fortunately I could do it w/o bothering the widow).

An other option is to register it for a short period in the name of the person dealing with the bike. Be aware, specially as a buyer, that the registered holder does not have to be the legal owner.

No, you don't. Just the grey card.

Does the bike have a plate at the moment?

Re: Swiss motorcycle documents required for sale

Thank you all for the very fast and useful responses. I am particularly indebted to ĎASwissInTheUSk who has solved my problem in providing both a comprehensive reply and an example of the form that must be searched for in England. The plates had been returned and the insurance cancelled by another person.

Do we need to search for the latest Swiss MOT before initiating the sale?

MFK (MOT) papers are not really relevant, it will say on the registration when it was last checked which is something that is relevant (On my car paper the date of last check when I bought it was mentioned under 38 or 39) and the latest MFK date was stamped in it.
