Swiss drivers license conversion after 3 years

Hi everyone,

Me and my wife have been living in Switzerland for the last 3 or so years. Never owned a car here but we sometimes rent for the weekend. Does anyone know if we must convert our old and valid EU licences to Swiss ones even if we only intend on renting cars for the foreseeable future ?

Thank you kindly.

Yes.

It is illegal to use within Switzerland after one year.

If you don't drive in Switzerland at all, no problem.

Don't drive anymore in Switzerland until you have Swiss driver licenses.

Download this form:

https://stva.zh.ch/internet/sicherhe...AUSL201902.pdf

Fill it in as much as you can, attach a photo and than take an ID along and pass by an optician for an obligatory eye test.

After that go by the STVA on the Uetlibergstrasse in Zürich, bring ID, Ausweis, the form and your current license and for less than a 100,- you have a new Swiss license in about a week in your mailbox. (if your Ausweis holds an invalid address you might pass by your kreisgebaude to get a paper stating where you life for about 20,- it is what I did to make things as smooth as possible )

Re: Swiss drivers license conversion after 3 years

Thanks for the help guys. For whatever reason I thought it might only apply to car owners but not casual renters. Guess I was do for an eye exam anyway, so we'll just go ahead and start the procedure. Thanks again for the step-by-step, much appreciated : )

Will they still convert one after a year of residence?

If no test was needed for the one yr exchange than at least you have 5 years to exchange simply.

Re: Swiss drivers license conversion after 3 years

No eye exam. Just a simple sight test.

One can exchange a foreign license without any issues whatsoever up to five years after becoming a Swiss resident.

Hmmmm, an unusual first post after 9.5 years. Is this the equivalent of leaving luggage unattended in an airport?

In 2030 we get the next letter, can only hope we live long enough to get the whole message, else I have to instruct my son.
