Internal car modification

Does anyone here modify cars? I was wondering what the laws are regarding modifying the inside of the car. In particular, around the console area (in a way which doesn't obstruct the view) e.g. adding a computer screen

Re: Internal car modification

Since nobody minds if I take out my radio and replace it with a DVD player with foldable screen, or glue an iPad to the mid-console this should be no problem.

Re: Internal car modification

For anything which is related with car modification see ASA Directive No. 2a
https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/direttive/

And also see the fact sheets:
https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/promemoria/

If it is not mentioned and it is not obviously dangerous it might be legal. The general rules for securely stored cargo will apply for sure.

I don't know know the details of what changes you are planing to do but if the modification fits the same size and location of the existing item then there is no issue. Eg, replacing a 8" radio/GPS with a 10" one because the new 10" device have smaller bezel is not an issue.

Good luck what ever your planing to do.

I fitted a DIN2 android head unit into my landrover, which had a single-height radio/cassette as standard. This involved fitting a purpose-built sheet metal piece over the entire console area and cutting/drilling a couple of bits of the original plastic away underneath.

So yes, it's not the same size as the original, but it never occurred to me to wonder whether it was legal, and I still can't imagine any reason why it might not be so.

In a similar vein I've also added a heated windscreen, raised drivers seat mounting, side bars/steps and a couple of internal trim mods, all without ever thinking about legality. I do think sometimes people overthink these things, but I'm happy to go with a common-sense approach, as the parts themselves are all EC-approved.

The power chip is another matter altogether...

Thanks. This is such an annoying policy: "The documents are only offered as read-only PDF. They cannot be downloaded and there is no paper version to be sent."
