Nice place to stop on the way to Cannes

Would like ideas of a nice and interesting place to stop for a day or two between Luzern and Cannes, France - going via Geneva rather than Genova (because of the delays in the decaying coast tunnels between Genova and Nice).

Of course we don't need to stop - it's easily doable in a day by car but want to make a trip out of it.

Annecy would be an obvious choice but I have been there many, many times already.

The other condition is that it has to be in France, rather than Switzerland.

Thanks

Re: Nice place to stop on the way to Cannes

Depending on your route:

1. Le Puy (a gorgeous medieval town that's the start of the French Camino)
2. Turin/Torino....Gorgeous Italian city influenced strongly by the Savoyen and the cloth of Turin.

Lyon is an interesting city to visit with lots to do. Perrouges is a nice medieval town not far from Lyon. You could easily fill a couple of days in Lyon.
Le Puy as suggested by Olygirl is a good shout.

What time of year are you going?

Orange or Avignon or Aix en Provence/Marseille are also options although they are much further south and nearer to Cannes.

Thanks for that. I'll look into Le Puy. We went to Turin for a few days in October on recommendations from people on this forum. It was great.

Re: Nice place to stop on the way to Cannes

Ive done the exact same before… we stopped over in Grenoble. Not because we checked out the town, but for the extended drive the next morning: Over a nice mountain pass down through the Provence on twisty country roads instead of the usual main highway. (but that might depend on when you want to do your trip… maybe not a smart idea for winter...)

Alas, Grenoble sucks.

Had a girlfriend in Romans/Isere (near Valence), Grenoble was on the way, crap city.

Beautiful place. We stayed there for a few nights, a fun town.

Avignon. Grenoble could be another option (it doesn't "suck" ).

I like Grenoble.

I used to spend a lot of time there when the weather was bad in nearby St.Hilaire Le Touvet (Paragliding).

We liked Grenoble too, Chambéry is also a nice little town.

We used to spend a fair bit of time in that region when we lived in Lyon.

Grenoble has its good parts with the old town, the Bastille fort, a student town etc... but grim places on the edge where they torch cars for fun on the weekends etc. So it's both crap and nice.

Re: Nice place to stop on the way to Cannes

I looked at Sisteron on the map last night.

I've been before many years before but my family haven't. It's a great place and it's directly on the route unlike some of the other suggestions which add a few hours on to the journey.

Seconded. My father owns a house in the Var and the only "direct route" stopover I remember as being of note is Sisteron.

I would not recommend Grenoble either. It was an unexpectedly crappy experience (also a stop over).
