Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

Hi all. I need the help of whoever lives close to Aarau. Here is why.

My dad has a conference next week in Oberentfelden. He is flying in to Zurich. Then, he plans to take the train from the airport, change at Lenzburg and arrive to Oberentfelden. Then hopefully taxi to the hotel.

In case he makes a mistake (which is possible because of the hotel name) and ends up in Aarau there is a train to take but its a local one and you need to request it to stop. Im not sure that would be doable. My question is: can he take a taxi from Aarau to his hotel or is it stupidly expensive? Is there any better way to go from the airport to the hotel?

They already messed up his hotel reservation once so thats why im panicking. I just dont want him to end up being lost somewhere. He only speaks English. Thanks

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

Large majority of people in Zürich/Aarau speak English.

Yes he can take a cab from Aarau station should be a couple standing there already, and yes they are expensive. However he should not have to travel more than 10KM, so a cab from Aarau to the hotel should not be more than 70,- chf (I only know Zürich cab prices, Aarau might be even cheaper.)

Unless every penny matters I'd just grab the train to Aarau and a cab from there.

Why should he end up in Aarau? He writes down the name and address of the hotel and gives it to the taxi driver in Oberentfelden. No big deal.

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

The hotel name is Aarau-West (educated guess)

Considering just 3 hotels in Oberentfelden they won’t go wrong.. however I wouldn’t be sure there will be taxis at the tiny station there available..

If he brings heavy luggage and isn’t prepared to walk (it’s just about 600m if my hotel guess is correct from the station) then maybe better to take a cab from Aarau itself.

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

I've payed 38 CHF from Aarau to Suhr with night pricing. Oberentfelden is about the same distance from Aarau.

Also, there are no taxis waiting at the Oberenfelden station, there's a pizza place only. So, you'll need to reserve one taxi when he arrives there.

To keeps things simple, the train IR37 links directly the Zürich airport with Aarau.

His son should pick him up from the airport. What is this?

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

Best would be to reach Aarau from airport. (there is a direct train) and then Taxy should cost something between 30-40 CHF.

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

Thank you all you are very helpful Especially with the taxis. I will tell him also about the Aarau possibility and we will see. Luckily it will still be daylight when we arrives

I called the hotel to enquire about the possibility to get a taxi directly from Zurich airport. The nice lady said, of course no problem. It is pretty close. It will only cost you about 200 francs! Welcome to Switzerland i guess?

So from what i can tell, he can either go to Aarau and get a taxi, or if he goes to Oberentfelden, he can call the hotel and they sent a taxi to the station.

Im panicking!

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

Ouf! All done. In the end he took the train all the way to Oberentfelden and only mixed up the platforms once. The walk from the station to the hotel was too long though! Thank you all for your help!

Now another question. He now has to come to Geneva. My idea is to go meet him and then go to Aarau for a walk and lunch before we return to Geneva.
I had a look at the trains and the local train needs a request to stop there. How i do that? Is there a button on the platform or something? And i had a look online and apparently there are luggage lockers in Aarau. Anybody knows how big they are? I couldnt find any info. Also, suggestions for lunch places closeish to the station are more than welcome!

Thank you

Re: Public transport from Zurich to Oberentfelden

The "request to stop" is normally just a button in the wagon, like the "STOP" buttons all over a bus that you press to get the bus to stop. Same thing, bigger bus, less wheels. Just keep an eye on where the train, and its best to learn the names of some stops along the way to reduce stress when you see 5 foreign names of cities and you question if you're even "on the train" That part is harmless (the stop button).

Thank you I will make sure to pay close attention to the app on my phone. What about asking for the train to stop when you are at the station? In Geneva you just put your hand out when the bus approaches. Im not so sure that this will work with a train

It would be easier with a photo but let's try words....the button to request the tram to stop is mounted on a blue panel in the tram station. It has two buttons, each one with an arrow for each direction. The buttons look like the ones from an elevator, they also light after you push them. But, I would not worry, the S14 tram is quite busy, almost all stops are used, even the optional ones.
