What paperwork should always be in the car with you?

Gray registration/title?
Copy of gray registration/title?
Insurance info

I think I found a historical thread on EF but now can't find it. In the US it was a no-no to keep the title in the car. But here it seems different because it also functions double-duty as vehicle registration, so I think maybe you need to always have the original with you. Is that right?

Re: What paperwork should always be in the car with you?

Yes, the grey card is required, although a copy will probably suffice if you're worried about carrying the original (but it's normal to do so). It lists your insurer so you don't need any other info from or about them.

It's not the equivalent of the US "title", which doesn't exist here or in most of Europe, but what you refer to as registration, which simply shows the registered owner/keeper of the car, but it's not a proof of ownership per se.

You should also have your driving licence with you whenever driving, which is different from some countries like the UK where you are allowed to present it at a police station within a given time frame.

I keep mine in my purse/wallet. Yes, a lot of people keep the car registration docs in the car.

I only have a copy of it in the car but you risk a fine for that, itís only 20chf so Iím prepared to take the risk.

I always have my driving licence with me in my purse.

I seem to remember a few years ago the driving licence also became a legally recognised form of id. Beforehand it wasn't.

If you carry your licence and do something silly, they can take it off you immediately and you can't drive home. If you don't they can't take it and you can drive home although you'll probably get a small fine. At least that's what I heard!

I think you heard wrong. if they're going to withdraw your licence then they can and will do so whether or not they have the actual card in their hand. They would most certainly not let you drive home, and would probably arrest you if you tried to do so.

It's what I've always used at Post Offices to pick up parcels, but it's not accepted by some institutions like, for example, applying for an in-store credit card. We decided to get a Manor card again after a few years absence (just because it gave an additional 20% off pre-xmas promotion prices on bedding and we were buying twelve sets for the second rental apartment we've now renovated) and they wouldn't accept it as official ID, so we had to do it in my wife's name as she had her passport & C permit in her handbag.

It applies to Germany. At least according to this article.

I did until I changed to a garage who leaves my car across the street with the windows down and the key in the ignition after finishing work. Yes we are in the sticks but where are people most desperate for a car? In the sticks.
