Audi A4 versus Wild Boar, score draw

We found out the hard way that Audi makes safe cars after hitting a 100kg wild boar recently. Driver and passenger safe and uninjured, wild boar and car sadly dead. Well, the car has been deemed not financially worth repairing by the “expert”. Every airbag opened, lots of broken and bent bits at the front and the driver side door panels slightly bent as a second boar slid down the side.

We are therefore looking to replace a 2015 A4 3 litre Diesel Quattro S line that had nearly every extra Audi CH could put on it. It was just before they changed the model so they put lots of extras on. Great car, very sad to have to change.

We need it to be:
Comfortable for long journeys, it takes at least 9 hours to drive to my Mums and I more often than not do this alone.
Decent driving experience, not run of the mill.
Automatic gearbox and enough power to get up and down mountain roads.
Enough space in the boot for the double dog box.

We are looking for something newer but not brand new and we will be buying it here in France.

Thoughts please, we are erring towards replacing with as close to the old as we can get but with the changes Audi have made in recent years we are not sure what to go for.

Re: Audi A4 versus Wild Boar, score draw

The boar was found the next day by the local hunters, some way from the crash site. They said it was not possible to use.

A hunter friend, from a different hunt, had that same afternoon given us a big piece of the boar he killed earlier that week. Wild boar revenge maybe

Re: Audi A4 versus Wild Boar, score draw

So, Audi garage has come back and suggested they can repair, “they think” for close to the “expert” value. They “think” that there should not be any huge surprises to increase the costs!

The carte Gris has been blocked and any repair would need the “expert” to inspect during and after, plus a new control technique prior to the carte Gris being unblocked. All costs associated with these checks would fall to us.

The question is, do we repair or replace?

We do, yes, but the insurance values the car €1800 below the repair costs.

Replace.

Having had a defender "repaired" following a low speed shunt (admittedly very well, I cannot tell the difference looking at it), it's never been the same. There has been a distinct "wobble" at speed.

As for the damage - actually that's not so bad! Had a friend find a deer come through the windscreen... he was lucky to get out alive.

Re: Audi A4 versus Wild Boar, score draw

I would replace probably if the numbers are not too bad. If you repair and any mechanical problem comes up in the next couple of years you'd always think bad. And if replacing I'd stick to the VW group, they make reliable and comfortable cars.
Seat Leon FR, Skoda Superb, VW Passat... something like that. Enough juice on the engine, very comfy and a bit cheaper than Audi

Re: Audi A4 versus Wild Boar, score draw

I was recently faced with the same decision and decided to replace as the insurance company gave me the option of repair or cash equivalent. I took the cash and sold the car to an exporter and ended up if front after a lot of haggling with exporters. It is not easy to determine a car's value as it is subject to individual feelings/circumstances as much as market forces, obviously an insurance company is going to be at the low end of value/prices. Having said that everything is negotiable if you push a bit and can back up your valuation (replacement cost or what you could sell it for before the pig ruined everyone's day) with comparable sales or comparis.ch valuation for example.

Bizarrely enough, it is our insurance agent who is disagreeing with the “expert” on the valuation, he believes it should be higher and has tried arguing the fact on our behalf. The “expert” does not agree!

We have spoken to a couple of people this week, including the mechanic who serviced the defender yesterday, and they all say replace. Even if it is repairable the “experts” will want to check everything to do with the repair, including okaying which new parts, and in so doing, make it really difficult and stressful.

We are going to the Audi garage tomorrow and see what they have available.
