When should I switch my winter tires for summer tires?

Figure I could draw some of you virologists out of those other threads

Re: When should I switch my winter tires for summer tires?

Well, winter tyres become effective when temperature drops below somewhere like 7 degrees C - so if you are still driving in the cold they may still be useful to keep for those occasions.

Most people change around early april, but that may depend on your circumstances. I plan to keep mine way into may/june because my tyres are getting older and still have plenty of thread - so it's more economic to wear them longer now.

"Swiss rule" is "von O bis O"... Oktober bis Oster but that's more in the case if you live high up in the mountain. I will switch end of this month

Re: When should I switch my winter tires for summer tires?

Do you have the tires at home and change them yourself or do you have the tires stored somewhere else and someone else will do the job?

If you do it yourself, you can do it whenever you prefer. I asked once the Swiss colleagues at work and they said "after Easter". As dandi said, in temperatures below 7 C, winter tires work better than summer tires (shorter braking distance, better cornering)

I have my tires stored. Last week I made an appointment. The whole month of April was already fully booked. The later I could find a place was for 31st March. I think I'll book faster next year and put extra attention to temp during April.

Also remember that suggested dates are only a "suggestion", always put attention to temperature. Last year we had snow and temps below zero on the Swiss plateau in early May. Drive extremely carefully in those conditions repeat because everyone will have summer tires by then. The same for September/October, all you need to rear-end someone is a morning below zero and a bit of ice on the road.

I appreciate the response from you guys, I really do. Unfortunately, I was only asking the question in jest. This question has already been answered a million times on this forum (just look at the similar threads below).

My intent really was to pull the usual suspects, who have been lately consumed with divulging all of their virology wisdom in the coronavirus threads, away from those threads. This thread could be a safe place for those posters to resume their knowledge divulgement on the usual topics of tire-rubber chemistry, what great drivers they are, how many motorcycles they own, etc.,.. etc.,..

The inevitable comment on how Teslas perform better on icy conditions may arrive soon.

I think you'll find that when fitted with proper tyres and living in icy conditions that Teslas are by far some of the safest vehicles out there, mostly due to them not being able to drive nearly as far as other cars...

Also the heat from the fires helps melt the ice ...

Re: When should I switch my winter tires for summer tires?

We still haven't got around to putting winter tyres on our Tesla... Mainly because Tesla told us that all of their cars are delivered with summer tyres, whatever time of year they're sold (turned out not to be true), and they wouldn't bundle a winter set with the car in one transaction, which is what I wanted. So in protest, I didn't buy their massively overpriced winter wheels & tyres set (CHF 5,000+) and basically never got round to finding an alternative.

And so far, so good. I guess I'll find some decent deals on winter tyres in late spring. Would June be a good time to switch?

Re: When should I switch my winter tires for summer tires?

Every time I changed my tires in April it snowed 6+cm the next day. Now I wait until May. Even then we may still get a snowstorm here and there. As said before its also temp dependent. Summer tires on cold streets can lose grip even when its dry. Dont ask how I know.

You should have winter tires by end of the month with "R" and should keep it till end of month with "R" (end of Sep to end of Apr)

You also need to check local ordinances. Some cantons forbid changing tyres on days of the week ending in "Y". In the whole of Romandie, where of course these laws are in French, the prohibition exists for days of the week ending in "I". Note that no work is allowed there on the Sabbath. For some strange reason, the German-speaking cantons state that tyre-changing is permitted only on days containing the letter "T".

It's probably best to go to Ticino. They do have rules about changing tyres, but if you change them between 10:00 and 16:00, the carabinieri are all at the osteria, so you'll be fine.

You could keep your winter tyres on and head to the ski resorts - like this Audi on the slopes at Hoch-YBrig
