Motor Oil

OK so my usual sources for getting Motor Oil from over the German border have all dried up, as the online auto parts stores have apparently gotten a visit from the Swiss mafia and closed shop. That includes ordering through Amazon. Now the only option is to make an order of $350 to avoid unreasonable shipping fees which will undoubtedly trigger the VAT charges. And with the current COVID19 situation, driving to Weil am Rhein isn't an option.

But my car needs oil.

I'm searching for 6L of 5w30 Magnatec Professional or Ford Formula F grade wss-m2c913-d. I used to be able to get it for between 40-50Fr. Here on our lovely Swiss island it's at least twice that. No justification for such highway robbery.

Any tips, leads or notions?

Re: Motor Oil

For what it's worth, Landi actually carries pretty cheap motor oil. 29.95 for 4L of 5W-30

They're open and it can be purchased in stores or ordered online

Option I in CH

It is available from Migros DO-IT in a 4L jug. You can order on-line. Delivery 5-7 days at the moment. AND IT IS ON SPECIAL UNTIL APRIL 6th

https://www.doitgarden.ch/de/p/62026...t-5w-30-c3-4-l

You could also look at a Migrolino gas station. They might have it. My guess would be at the higher price though.

Option II in CH

It is cheaper from these guys. 4L jug as well. Not sure about shipping cost though since you need to sign in to see the cost.

Re: Motor Oil

Most of the online parts store are actually German, and deliver from German warehouses.

auto-doc, pkwteile, etc for sure are under auto-doc and deliver from Germany. I ordered quite a bit of stuff earlier in March, and at checkout they tell you that you should expect import charges. I went to their German website, shipped to the border and was done.

Reifendirekt also belongs to a big group, and they do deliver from Germany, but they import themselves so what you see is what you pay. I've bought motor oil many times from Reifendirekt, at what I think was the best price at the market.

Last time I ordered engine oil from Amazon DE as they had cheapest price for the specific oil I needed, and I collected from the border with the other stuff from autodoc.

Re: Motor Oil

Reminds me of the time, mid 70's. when I could buy a gallon of Shelloil for 99p and sold it to a garage in Lausanne for £3 I think it was.

Did 3 x 3.5 tonne loads which I drove down myself and all was fine till a heavy knock on my door from one of those guys you just know is bringing bad news, and an injunction from Shell.

Went to my local solicitor who told me there was nothing Shell could do as this was not prohibited, however, if I wanted to fight the injunction, I would win, but they would appeal and put every legal obstacle known to man in my path, including I put up an indemnity for their legal costs. Just to start a barrister would want £10k up front to. Yeeks. For £10 hew wrote a nice letter to them explaining my ignorance and assuring them I would desist immediately

Re: Motor Oil

Migros looks like an ok deal. Still not as good as I used to find, but it might be the best Swiss option. The auto-doc has the standard 35.- shipping for orders under 350.- That's everywhere now, which is what makes it look like the mafioso got to them all.

Thanks for the Migros tip!

Re: Motor Oil

Reifendirekt was one of my long time resources, and they partnered with Autoteile Meile for a while. Now the latter is completely closed up, and Reifendirekt only does tires. No more oil or parts.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Whoosh! - they're all gone.

Re: Motor Oil

Oil can be ordered lots of places. CHF20 per liter for an off brand oil is hardly a good deal. Fairly expensive actually. The places I'm talking about were selling Magnatec for 10.- per L.

I use Okay oil in my old pickup. 5 bucks per liter. That's exactly the price I'd expect to pay for an off brand oil. It's perfect for people who think oil is oil (I go back and forth). I wouldn't risk using it in a modern car though.

Re: Motor Oil

In the end I found a guy selling 20L containers of Magnatec Start-Stop 5W-30 for 150.- on Ricardo, fresh and unopened. That'll hold me over for the next two years.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
