Family car for 4: toddler and baby

I am in the market for a used car that is large enough for a family of 4 that requires 2 car seats in the back and if possible an adult next to them, has plenty of cargo space and has all the usual safety features.

It has to be automatic.

I don't like to buy new as I regretted buying my first car, instead I'll be looking for something since 2018 with < 50,000 km

Budget up to 35,000 chf if possible.

I keep hearing good things about the Toyota RAV4 for example.

Any experiences from family people here? I don't want to be changing cars every 2-3 years, needs to be big enough to hold stroller, grocery, kids stuff etc

Re: Family car for 4: toddler and baby

Do you want a sedan, wagen, hatch, SUV, Van or something else?
Do you want something with power that fast or economical?
As for anything with a used battery I would be careful.

Re: Family car for 4: toddler and baby

Speed and power is of no importance, I don't go to mountains and I don't speed.

Purely family criteria: big space and safe.

The usual scenario would be 2 car seats in the back seat, strollers on the trunk and groceries, among other things.

I never had an SUV, they look so spacy and sturdy. I was thinking something like that but definitely not a van. My parking space wouldn't be able to fit a car bigger than a SUV.

If space is the key factor, then a Mercedes V-class or a VW T6. You wouldn't even need to fold the stroller.

If it doesn't need to be that big, than any station wagon has at least as much space as an SUV. For example, a Skoda Octavia.

Might want to have a look at Subaru. Even a new XV is within your price range as a hybrid. All wheel boxers are family safe. Rarely go off road unintentionally. Otherwise have a look at Octavias or Golfs. The Alltraks are nice.

If you're not in a hurry it might be worth it to see what prices on the market will do, due to Corona the car market has crashed and German dealers have huge amounts in stock they need to get rid of. German experts expect sale offers of up to 50% on new cars.

Volvo XC70.

Though my son and his wife have gone for a Mini Clubman. Not really enough room for a third adult in my view.

I would look for one of the Koreans. You could easily pick a well equipped model with 5+ year warranty left with this budget.

Had the same problem, went for a Ford S-Max, it has 3
Separate seats individually adjustable and with isofix on all 3 seats.
Anything with a rear bench is a compromise.

Re: Family car for 4: toddler and baby

That's the point - if you wish to go for three isofix, the only option is a van. Just ridiculous how car makers don't care about families with more than one kid.

All suggestions above for non-van vehicles are pretty much the same - standard isofix on outer seats, and useless middle seat (you can't fit an adult there, and neither you can put a child seat).

SUVs - another story. Love those brilliant designer minds advertising seven seaters with isofix all over, including the second row seats. For what purpose? if you put child seats on a standard bench, the second row with or without isofix becomes completely useless.

Well, if you already reached the stage when you've completely given up on life. . . kid number one is annoying and he's picked up horseback riding instead of (insert sport of your choice here), kid number two favors your wife and he's got that speech impediment, where you have to fork out the 150Chf every week into seeming eternity for a lesson with that homeopathic specialist. . .and your wife wanted that expensive kitchenaid machine, which sits comfortably in a far away corner of the tiled ktichen, because let's face it, your wife was right, tile is so much more Feng-Shui and it helps her relax. . yes my friend, life's got you by the scrotum in her freshly manicured hands but you still got some bite behind the menthol cigarette bark and you don't want to go out like a whimp. Because that's what Larry did and Larry got taken to the cleaners, after lawyer fees, yes that shyster lawyer who got recommended by his cousin, well all Larry owns now are roughly 9 pints of blood, because it's Tuesday and Tuesday was donation day. Anyways, long story short. Here is something which still shows that you care. . .that the fight is not over yet, the whole horeshit-riding thing might just be a phase and the smoking-hot intern did indeed flirt with you by the watercooler.

I present you, a Cadillac (Pronunciation: KKa-duh-lllagg make sure to pronounce it loud and proud, like you just did your boss' wife and brag about it at a company BBQ after you just got fired)

https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/cadi..._asc&vehtyp=10

Also, it distinguishes you from the crowd and is a step above any Kraut Mobile anybody at the office may drive. "No Rainer, I've never had a problem with my Cadillac, smooth as butter I tell ya, wish I'd bought one sooner"

Not true with the Ford S-Max.

The middle seat fits a child's seat or an adult. The last row is a bit low for adults though, but the Galaxy is an alternative if the extra headroom is needed.

OP - test drive, test drive, test drive.

By the time you and your wife narrow down your interests, you can find the best deal....

For us, it was a 6 month old car with 17k Kms. The sticker price was over 13k CHF less than it was before.

Slightly used is the best deal, but you can get a sweet company discount for a new car from the big dealers.

Take your time so you really make an informed decision.

Can recommend the BMW 530e.

https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/bmw-...1588&vehtyp=10

Big inside for doing reasonable road trips (Zurich to Stockholm, Zurich to Dubrovnik already done), comfortable for all and not too big for Swiss parking spots. The only thing might be the boot space is a little taken up by the batteries.

Good luck!

Re: Family car for 4: toddler and baby

I am a really big VW fan.

IMO, the VW Tiguan is great, looks the part with tons of safety features, driver assistance systems and a 2018 model is well in your price range.

I too am in the market and will be upgrading my 2017 VW Golf for a 2018/9 Tiguan.

All comes down to personal preference I suppose.

Happy Shopping.
