Washing cars during COVID-19 pandemic

Hi there,

They recently renovated a part of the street on which I live and they did not tell a soul anything about it. Needless to say, a lot of cars which were not parked in garages (including mine) now look like they have just returned from a nice Safari in the sub-Saharan region. The cherry on top came this week when all the Pollen that was floating around sedimented, on the asphalt, on the people walking the streets, on the grass, and on the ... cars. Now they all look like a grotesque post-modernistic version van Gogh painting... a lot of colors, that`s true. But still, driving around with a car like that in Switzerland is like an invitation for a police check.

While this might sound like a redundant question, I did my google job but to no avail. Does anyone know of any car wash in the Zurich area that would be open, despite this COVID-19 lockdown? I do not have the possibility to wash it myself, maybe just with a bucket, but that would not bring much and would just turn all the dust on my car in a layer of concrete-pollen mix.

Thank you all in advance!

I've seen signs up on multiple garage wash areas that they'll be open on Monday. The one nearest to me was open until this week when they put up a sign saying closed until Monday.

I have never understood this obsession with washing cars.
You put in petrol, have it serviced regularly and it will get you from A to B.
Why wash it?
It is not going get you there there any quicker. And after washing it, you probably feel the need to polish it. Humans are strange.

Indeed they are...
Ever wanted to maintain the things you own in good state so they last you longer?
Or had a certain passion/love for something, and wanted to take proper care of it?

It's fine to not understand - I am sure there are things you are doing that others don't understand either.

Re: Washing cars during COVID-19 pandemic

The one close to my place in Buchs (AG) is closed, but other Soft Car Washes are open. Why the difference? no idea. https://www.softcarwash.com/CH/Standorte

Anyway, all carwashes open next Monday https://twitter.com/BAG_OFSP_UFSP/st...61436119285760

I drove today to the office to pick-up another computer screen since we'll stay at home at least some more weeks. I was impressed at the amount of expensive cars full of pollen. It was that moment that you realize who has money and how's a show-off who went for the most expensive model but can't afford covered parking.

I always wash my car once it is so dirty that my clothes get dirty. Apart of that, I agree. Especially in the winter it is strange to have a shiny car.

Many carwashes became hang-out spots for people to show of their cars, due to these gatherings many carwash spots were forced to close or did so voluntarily.

Re: Washing cars during COVID-19 pandemic

Never mind Covid - we have a serious drought on at the moment, so car washing is hardly a priority. I do run to hose on our solar panels daily, quickly- as the pollen is so thick it would reduce efficacy.

Re: Washing cars during COVID-19 pandemic

We have 2 washing ports in my parking garage. This being said, I hardly use them, unless my car absolutely looks like it was chased through the mud by a rabid yeti. Other than that, let the pollen, pollen. Doesn't bother me one bit.

You've obviously not lived anywhere in the USA where it snows. Washing your vehicle in the winter is a must, because the salts they use on the roads are very corrosive and your car won't last long otherwise. But pollens? who cares.

I drive a Yeti and I can assure you it is not rabid.

Many of the commercial car washes are water neutral. Not sure how it works but they only use a soup-son of water.

Jeremy Clarkson

"What a meaningless way of passing the time. You don’t wash your vacuum cleaner or your television set, you have a machine to wash the dishes and you employ a man to clean your windows. So how much do you have to hate the sight of your wife and children before you think, “I’d rather go outside into the cold and spend a couple of hours burnishing my wheel nuts” "

You can successfully self-isolate in your car! Hopefully introduce contactless payment.

Re: Washing cars during COVID-19 pandemic

Hello all,

First of all I would like to thank everybody for their replies. Even the sarcastic ones I appreciate very much. I come from a region of Europe where sarcasm and irony are the modus operandi, so I need to say that some of the replies made me feel like in downtown Bucharest. A touch of home in an expat forum in the Swiss Confederation, coming from people that stem from various parts of the world. I have to say that I have really missed this. The Swiss (and Germans) have no understanding of sarcasm.

And now to the important point of the topic. From an acquaintance I have here I found out that the Car Wash near the McDonalds Drive in in Schlieren was always open and still is every day until 7:00 PM. I went there. So if anyone has a similar issue as myself, over the weekend the Car Wash in Schlieren next to Mcdonalds is open. I do not know if they will be back to 24/7 from Monday as I did not ask.

Thank you all for making my evening better with your replies. Both the ones that helped and the ones that were just kvetching.
