Built a box for my truck, do i need it registered?

Hello all,

During the quarantine i decided take on the project of building some boxes for the bed of my toyota hilux. I looked through the regulations "741.41 *** Verordnung über die technischen Anforderungen an Strassenfahrzeuge (VTS)" and cannot determine if i am in our out of the requirements to register my boxes. I have a picture of them here. What is the public opinion? As far as i can tell as long as I cut off any sharp edges which could be hazardous it should be ok... Anyone have a regulation within they could make an argument to cite me for?

Cheers,

Adam

You'll find that each canton will give you different information. Did you try calling the vehicle authority (similar to SCAN in French Part of Switzerland?)?

I had a pair of fog lights installed around 1.5 inches outside of the front bumper (On a Jeep grand cherokee), when I lived in canton AG for a few months. I was told its not legal without registering in in the grey book. Same was said for my LED light bar installed on the roof (removable).

But there were no issues in canton NE when I registered the same vehicle.

God luck and that's one cool looking ride!

That red top? I would say, yes, needs registering.
You could also just ask TCS, in an email with photo, I suppose they can tell you.

That box is slightly higher than the front. Did you test the effect of wind at high speed yet?

Next to the VTS you can find practical notes in the following documents:

ASA guideline 2a https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/direttive/
and ASA leaflets 13 and 16 https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/promemoria/

I am not surprised regarding the fog lights. The regulations have very defined requirements for lights and mods for lights. There are not such specific requirements related to my box. Only that it must not present hazards based on its shape. As far as i have read so far that seems to be the case.
