Swiss border opening - current situations

Starting from Wednesday Italy opens border with Switzerland. However, Switzerland doesn't open it.
Does it mean that it is possible to travel to Italy from Switzerland but not the other way round?
What about entering Austria and Germany for the transit purpose?
My intend is drive to Croatia by car.

My wife went for a Dr's appointment in Geneva from France yesterday, got stopped entering & straight through as no guard on the return. Way easier than a month ago with very long queues.

Travelling to Italy is currently "allowed, but strongly discouraged".

Until today, it was generally not possible to enter Italy.
From tomorrow it will be possible but with some restrictions, and the access to Switzerland is not completely granted as per Schengen agreements.

It is stille forbidden to go to Italy to shop.

I’d like to drive into Divonne from Switzerland to pick something up from a relative there. Is this permissible under the current rules.

Dunno about Italy, but for the French border crossings around Basel it will mean unblocking the smaller ones that have had physical barriers in place and less of a presence from Douanes or Police, possibly even returning to many of them normally being completely unmanned 99% of the time.

From what I understand.... the Italians will let Swiss in & the Swiss as always will let them back. However the Swiss won't let Italians in.

I'm in Gex on Friday, I can pick it up for you if you like.

Rarely there is a question on why you were in France, only residence is checked

Re: Swiss border opening - current situations

There is a bit of confusion because the term "opening the border" is overloaded. What the newspapers usually mean is "allowing entry to everyone who would've been allowed to enter before corona crisis", but if you want to go to Italy and come back there are 4 distinct policies you will be subject to: crossing Swiss border out, crossing Italian border in, then crossing Italian border out and crossing Swiss border in.

The only step that changes tomorrow is the one where you cross the Italian border to enter Italy.

During this crisis, Switzerland has never blocked anyone from leaving, and residents were always free to enter Switzerland, Italy also won't block your from leaving Italy. So starting tomorrow, you are probably free to go to Italy and come back. What does not change tomorrow is the possibility of Italians to travel abroad.

Note that any of this can change at any time for any reason (from less extreme as "while you are in Italy, Switzerland decides that once you re-enter you will need to quarantine" to more extreme as "Italy locks down you current area and blocks you from leaving it"). But from what the two countries have been saying so far, it seems unlikely that any of the two countries will do anything, unless some other huge spike in infections is registered.

I even saw Swiss statements that they are planning to re-allow shopping only journeys.

Re transit: Switzerland for example always allowed to transit through it for any reason, so I would just check the same for the countries you need to go through - they might have similar rules

This.

I went to Italy last week. Was possibly to leave Switzerland easily (no check), but to enter Italy, you had to be an Italian resident or have a valid reason + forms.

From tomorrow, you can enter Italy under Schengen agreements.

To re-enter Switzerland, Italy will let you out, but Switzerland wont let you in (unless you have a Swiss residence permit, then you won't have too many issues).

Travel purely for shopping will come with a 100chf fee

What about crossing the border with Germany to transit to Austria?
Has anyone tried that?

Why not go directly to Austria & skip Germany. The border is anal beware, once they would not let me cross with my car as I did not have m C permit with me, car & driving license in my name.

To Austria? I've crossed that border about 30 times and only been stopped once on the way back in. They only asked if I was bringing any meat or alcohol back with me. I've been stopped on the Austria/Germany border more than once, but that was at the refugee crisis times.
Some border guards could just have a bad day/power trip sometimes.

Re: Swiss border opening - current situations

Similarly, assuming that Switzerland opens its border with France and France opens its border with Belgium on 15th June, I am wondering if I will be allowed to drive from here to Belgium in the second half of June, or if I will have to wait for the more general Schengen opening in July.

Any idea what the situation at airports is like for Schengen flights, and especially Basel airport, seeing this is a special case and technically on French soil?

Re: Swiss border opening - current situations

While Swiss can enter Italy and return, Italians can only come in (talking Ticino) if they have a reason such as work. Transit for non CH/I also fine, but not sure how they can control people not stopping to shop, eat etc?

However, Swiss still cannot shop in Italy. If they do it's a CHF 100 fine.

My flatmate flew for business reasons yesterday - the challenge is more that of getting a flight to go where you need to be. Where there was a direct flight to Budapest before, he had to go via Frankfurt to get there. Still quicker than driving there by car, which is what he did last week.

Face mask had to be worn on board and they seated passengers as far apart as possible.

You can drive without issues through Austria-Germany-Slovenia (what I intend to do this Saturday), if you are a Croatian citizen.
And I believe Austria just announced that you can "stop also while in transit", which was forbidden until now.

I would choose that way any day against over Italy; even though Gotthard might be emptier than usual...
