Custom Building a Motorcycle in der Schweiz...

Hi.

I'm seeking guidance re: building a custom motorcycle in Switzerland. To be clear, i am not seeking to modify or customize an existing motorcycle. Rather as an engineer/fabricator, I am looking to hand-fabricate one myself using a combination of a custom-made frame, off-the-shelf parts, and engine borrowed from an old BMW. This is a project I have been planning for some time but expected to execute it in my home country. However now that we have settled in Switzerland for the long-term (at least another 12-15 years here) I would like to execute the build here instead.

The only question is: Given the strictness of the laws here in Switzerland.... Is registering and passing MFK for such a motorcycle even possible?

Appreciate any guidance or advice that the sages here could offer.

Rgds...

Possible but costly as you might need papers from an approved testing institute (Anerkannt Prüfstelle APS).

Please read and understand ASA directive 2b
https://asa.ch/it/biblioteca-online/direttive/
It references the relevant laws and regulations as well define what further evidences you might need.

Yes, I also imagine that it will be costly, even importing a bike can be costly (which I've done twice).

And excellent knowledge of the local language and the relevant laws is also required.

But, people certainly do it here, just not very widespread. The hot-bed seems to be the Luzern area.

Thanks for the link. I will review directive 2b as soon as I can convince my translation software to work with their site. My Deutsche is OK but definitely not good enough yet for that.

Sounds potentially expensive. Can you venture a guess as to what those costs might be? Are we talking 1,000 CHF or 10,000 CHF? Or more?

Appreciate your insights.

Thanks Tom.

My project could potentially use an existing frame but it would require several modifications. Do you think that would make it less costly and easier from an approval perspective? Or is that just the same can of worms with a different name?

Far easier than to try to register a one-off frame.

Also, a one-off would need to meet modern emissions, lighting, etc., one based on a used frame would just need to meet those in force the year it was first registered.

That makes sense and would seem to make the entire project easier as my design is 1950's era BMW-ish in nature. Do they allow replica bikes to be registered as the year they were originally made? Or would a replica also have to meet the modern emissions, lighting, etc? I ask because an original frame would be 20x the cost of a replica - - assuming that I could even find an original.

Re: Custom Building a Motorcycle in der Schweiz...

You would need a motor and the registration paper of the bike it was used in. This should be pre 1986. Then you can add a new frame. Problem at what modification Art. 4 Abs. 3 VTS kicks in and the grandfathering clause of Art. 4 Abs 1 VTS no longer applies.
https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...165/index.html

All current rules apply ff you do not have any old registration papers you could base your build upon.
