UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

Hi, This has probably been asked but I can't find the answer if so...

I need to swap my UK license for a Swiss one within a couple of weeks. If I just exchange for a simple, non professional license, I have to sign a declaration saying I forfeit all my entitlements to drive everything except a car and a motorbike (my UK license lets me drive everything from a lorry to a fire engine).

I'd be happy to do this while I'm here, but if I were ever to return to the UK, do I exchange my Swiss license for a UK one with the reduced entitlements (i.e. just car and motorbike) or would I get my full UK entitlement back? Any ideas?

You will probably get your full UK one back, check on their website your driving license status & the groups.

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

I can't give you an exact answer - but I would assume you would "lose" your UK entitlements.

These are based on three factors:
1- When we swapped paper to card DLs in the UK, many people lost entitlements accidentally... unless you kept a photocopy of your paper license, these were permanently lost

2- When I was back in the UK a while back, I tried using my old driving license number to see on the DVLA system if I could get a temporary code... this didn't work, suggesting that my ID has been scrubber or at least disabled.

3- How would the DVLA check if you kept the CPD requriements in the time you were in CH?

EDIT: I change my previous answer... see : https://www.gov.uk/government/public...iving-licences
Quote:
If you return here from a country that is not in the EU or
EEA and you do not have a GB licence, you may:
• drive for up to 12 months on a valid licence that is not a GB licence
• apply for a replacement of your previous GB licence by paying the appropriate fee and giving up any non-GB licence you hold.
So seems like you would get it back.... That said, I would contact the DVLA to make sure...

thanks for this! I actually did try getting in touch with the DVLA but you can't at the moment unless you're a key worker.

I did the same. It was actually free for me to change from Swiss back to UK. My original license number was the same and I had all my original UK entitlements on the license again.

You will not lose your entitlements. I did this from UK - Dutch - UK and everything was restored.

My brother ended up with a motorbike license after having a Swiss license for 5 years, when reverting to a UK one

Your UK license number is printed on the Swiss licence card so Im sure once you revert back to the uk one then the UK drivers licence number will be used and restored?

My husband did this, but the other way. He gave them up for UK licence, then when he returned to Switzerland he did not get them back!

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

I just checked the dvla site out of interest, and I'm still listed with a full licence. It's expired, having been here for nearly 20 years, but if I were a UK resident I'd simply be able to renew the licence as it was. All the categories, including those I gave up here, are correctly listed.

https://www.viewdrivingrecord.servic...n#your-details

Needed my driver number and NI number, which for some reason I could remember straight off the top of my head, and it's still listed at my last UK address.

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

Another question on this- hopefully people will notice as I didn't want to start a new thread. What do I ask my doctor for? As in, what specific certificate do I need for the advanced driving categories? Is it a specialist thing? I was under the impression I could ask my doctor for the necessary cert but she doesn't seem to be aware of what form it takes. Any clues? (I have two weeks now until my UK one expires)

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

I don't remember exactly but I don't think you need another extra form, the doctor needs to sign and stamp the document you get from the Strassenverkehrsamt or road traffic office wherever you're located, I believe opticians could also do it, my doctor knew what to do and it was pretty straight forward, just be careful to check the price of the consultation, I got a bill for 70chf which seemed steep since I was only in five minutes

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

I converted my UK to CH license back in 2012 on my first year of arrival. It was easy and all done through the local Gemeinde. I had lots of vehicle options in my UK one, including apparently a heavy lorry (never was tested, apparently comes with years of experience). Somehow my motorbike option was removed in the CH license but all other options remained, including the lorry. Ever since, I have been asked to do a full check up by an approved doctor (listed on the form) every 3-5 years (depending on age) to keep that last option, which I was strongly encouraged to keep I kind of do this every 3 years (cost almost 200chf) as a health check for me, and keeping all options open: who knows I may need to drive a lorry one day during such strange times

I tried the website, but I don't find any code on my swiss licence card which they accept. Can you clarify where exactly on the card this should be ?

It's not.

The UK driver number is based on your name and date of birth, or at least mine is, taking the form of 5 digits of surname, 6 digit jumbled date of birth, two initials, then 1 random number, two random letters. No way you'd guess it from that, but if you have it written down anywhere or once memorised it that may help.

e.g. Eric Joe Bloggs, born on July 18 1970, could be blogg707180ej9zz

EDIT: should have just looked it up https://ukdriving.org.uk/licencenumber.html

Re: UK driving license > Swiss driving license > UK driving license

So, this might be of use to some of you. I tried to book an appointment with a level 2 medical driving examiner so as to keep all my driving categories on my transfer Swiss license, but he was booked through to September. I went to the vehicle office this week to do the swap, and the person at the counter asked me if I was sure I wanted to relinquish my extra driving entitlements. I explained that I didnt have time to get the exam done if I wanted to exchange my license within the year I had since moving. She went away to speak with her supervisor, and when she came back told me that I could write in after Id exchanged Licenses requesting they add the missing categories back. Id need to take the medical once theyd confirmed in writing that this would be acceptable, and pay another 45 CHF for another license to be printed, and I could do this within 5 years. So, pressure off!
