UK car in Switzerland for up to a year

Does anyone have experience bringing a UK car to Switzerland? We are moving to Geneva and will bring our UK car but intend on returning this to the UK at some point later in the year (depending on the quarantine situation). As I understand it we have up to a year to register the vehicle in Switzerland. Is that correct or would this change when you are registering to live in Switzerland? I know that for Swiss insurance we would need to register within three months but avoiding this by taking out a specialised insurance with unlimited cover abroad (incl. Switzerland). Again if you have any experience/tips on this front please let me know.

Correct - when you enter with the car you declare it (25chf or so), and they give you a paper. That starts the import proess. You then have 12 months to complete the import (or return it to the UK).

Note, that if you had the car for less than 6 months (as per V5), you pay taxes on it.

The biggest issue is getting insurance, as most (all?) UK insurances (at least all I looked at) had limits per trip or limits per year (usually 30 days per trip).

Do you have the original receipt for the purchase of the car with the price you paid at the time, if you do, bring it

I think you will need to make adjustments to your headlights.

Make sure you have a long MOT. UK Road Tax (if your MOT runs out, you would not be allowed to drive it back, expensive to get it shipped back)

re insurance, yes many only do 30 days, some do 3 months, believe Stuart collins does longer, but at a price

here is a useful link to another thread here

In the search feature TOP RIGHT, put in UK Car, there are a number of threads

We once brought over a UK car, then changed it to Swiss Plates then brought it back to UK and changed it back to same UK plates

If you wanted to change UK car to Swiss plates, the speedometer has to be in kilometers, it is was only in miles would need to be changed

I would have thought that insurance is based on you remaining UK residents, but you will be resident in Switzerland. You might find out it’s invalid.

UK insurance provides the legal minimum cover in Switzerland and is not in itself limited to a period like 90 days - that's for extra-mandatory insurance like accidental damage fire and theft. Insurance companies probably won't be impressed though if you've moved address. "Temporary" stays are allowed but you should check with your current insurance.

I insured my UK car just on the number they give you when you declare it at the border but it seems like it might not be valid until you get Swiss plates - I'm not sure about that as you need the insurance before you can take the technical inspection.

You can also get UK based insurance for having a UK car long term in Switzerland.

Many people (mostly wrongly) use their car here if they have a residence in the UK with the idea that they can hide their Swiss documents and claim to be tourists. This might work if you're "temporarily" in Switzerland. Being Swiss resident doesn't automatically stop you being resident elsewhere.
