Importing a car from USA

Hi,

I am moving to Switzerland with my boyfriend in 2 months and will be looking for a job there. I am from Germany so I believe with EU passport I can do that for 6 months.

I am planning to bring my car from America and I understand that I don't need to pay any customs or VAT as I have owned the car for more than a year. Will I be able to register my car in Switzerland as I will be a job seeker at the beginning? Does it make more sense to register the car to Germany (my home country) and use it in Switzerland?

Thanks a lot

Re: Importing a car from USA

You do not have 6 months, you are allowed 3 months to stay here without a permit. You can register the car here when you become a Swiss resident. And no as a Swiss resident you cannot register your car in Germany and drive it in Switzerland.

As for your car, how original is it and does the model have road allowance here?

Re: Importing a car from USA

Having recently shipped a car from 'Murica to CH, my advice is to be careful. Due to Covid-19, the shared container and freight consolidation services are not functioning with their usual efficiency. If you decide to ship your car, you might as well pay for a dedicated container or use a roll-on-roll-off (RoRo) service and plan to retrieve your car at the port. And, if you're going to pay $4-$6K for a dedicated container, I hope it's a nice car. Good luck!
