Insurance Green Card for New Car before Departing on Trip

I will collect my new car this week and two days later depart on a trip outside of Switzerland. Registration and insurance has been arranged on the car, all good.

I have discussed this (taking the trip) with my insurance company who advised that I am definitely insured but that I should carry the green card (internationally recognized proof of motor insurance) on my trip.

My concern is that this may not arrive in time, with the rest of the insurance paperwork. My insurance company has asked that I e-mail the new car's updated grey card today (which I have done) and they will do their best.

Supposing the green card does not arrive in time, could this cause me an issue? Any guidance much appreciated!

You do not need a green card unless you're going outside of the EU/EEA, e.g. to Russia or somewhere equally distant.

Your insurer is recorded on the registration document (aka Grey Card) and is deemed sufficient proof.

Here from the relevant authoroty.

In a light green marked countries the license plate and the gray card act as proof of insurance and the green card is not needed.

In the dark green countries you will need the green card as proof of insurance. In addition your insurance provider might exclude coverage in those countries. Iran, Belarus, and Russia are often excluded. If they are excluded they are like a gray country.

In the gray countries the green card is not valid and you need to get a separate mandatory liability insurance coverage. This is sometime sold at the border of said country a.k.a frontier insurance.

PS: Since July 1st 2020 the green card can also be printed on white paper.
