car insurance for shared number plates

When one buys a new car while keeping the old car, is it possible to terminate the old car insurance to switch to another insurance for both cars on shared number plates?

Or, is it possible/plausible to have two separate insurances for each car although number plate is shared?

Not sure. I believe the opposite is possible, terminating the old joint policy in the event of putting them on different plates, so maybe.

No. In any event, it would completely nullify any advantage gained from sharing the plates, so why you would want to I don't know.

Well, I would not prefer to have separate insurances. The old insurance is more expensive, so, I am checking to see whether this is a condition for terminating old insurance and switching to a cheaper one to cover both cars, before the normal termination period.

So, with a new car on shared plates, insurance has to be updated to cover both. If I cannot switch to a new insurance in this case, then maybe I cannot switch even if I sell the old car later, as it is just another update of the insurance. But it sounds weird that I will be stuck with the same insurance until the normal termination period comes.

Simple, cancel insurance on existing car by taking the grey card for cancellation. Insure new car with new insurance, add old car & get new grey card for old car.

Yes, just cancel the plates on both, and re-register. BTDT.

Not sure what is the problem, an appreciable number of people have a summer cabriolet and a winter wagon, with only one set of plates. I assume they just inform the insurance company who adjust the premium accordingly.

You pay the higher premium plus around 50 CHF, same for the annual tax.

The premium is the same for one or two, there is nothing to inform or adjust.

I have had four sets of shared plates for decades, so I do have some experience here.

You only have 5 months in 2020, get new car with old insurance company and Switch to your favorite insurance company in 2021. This is considering you donít have 2 years commitment to current insurer.
