Speed Limit Solution

Is it a crazy idea to ask anyone if you know of an app/instrument that can detect speed limit cameras or beep if you are above the speed limit?

Yes - I know the car has a speedometer but I get so nervous trying to keep up with the constant changes of speed limits in a trajectory of half a kilometer.

Oh dear...I can only imagine the replies. Mercy for the parents driving with screaming kids please..

Re: Speed Limit Solution

Many cars have it either as standard or as an option.
In order to be accurate, ideally have a solution with realtime maps.

Edit: didn't read it well. i meant indication of maximum speed. speed camera warnings are indeed illegal.

Re: Speed Limit Solution

A device thats warns the driver of an upcoming speed camera is illegal here. Apps do exist but you shouldn't get caught using it

Go here to Here Wego
https://wego.here.com/?map=47.3992,8.3956,10,normal
Download the app on your phone.
Put in your driving coordinates and it will beep whenever your over the limit.
This is the original Nokia developed mapping system that is nowadays a freebie!

So have a nice sound full trip!

Re: Speed Limit Solution

Don't most/all devices like TomTom's have this? Ours does. Has an option to let you know if you go over the speed limit.

Really if you're that anxious about it you shouldn't be driving because it should be a natural reaction for you to check your speedo.

What I would have liked is a device that can tell you of an upcoming speed limit change rather than it being a surprise or missing a 120 sign in a 100.

Re: Speed Limit Solution

For a ‘legal’ speed camera ‘detector’ you could the Waze app. Primarily for notifications about traffic problems, in Switzerland it shows cameras as being police. It doesn’t detect the radar, just uses the data base.

The challenge for anything like this is to have a current and up to date data base.

Re: Speed Limit Solution

Is the "stop screaming or I'll stop the car and make you walk" method not a thing anymore? People who have uncontrollably drunk people in the car are liable to get into trouble, if your kids are so bad that you can no longer drive safely, surely the same will apply?

Cruise control, aka tempomat

No excuses not to adhere to posted speed limits really. If kids or anything else are too much of a distraction I would suggest not being on the road in the first place

Well except for the fact that your speedo isn't accurate and is likely underestimating your speed. With my Yeti when the speedo shows 124 GPS shows 120.

So no excuses not to adhere to posted speed limits + 2-4kph.

But I believe the OPs request was a better way to be informed of changes to speed limits before they occur.

Re: Speed Limit Solution

Convince your kids that it's vital that they spot speed signs and make you aware of them or there will never be trips out again. Make it a little competition to see who spots them first?

As others have mentioned, some cars have it built in and I believe it's one of the things which is meant to become a new standard as per EU regs. I know we're not in the EU, but once they start sticking them in I don't think they'll be running a different process just for this market.
For ones which run of GPS, you'll need to keep it updated, or revert to Eyeball Mk.I hardware which requires more attention but should promise more consistent results.

Don't worry. From May 2022 all cars sold in the EU must have this technology. Not only parents with screaming kids miss a speed limit sign, a lot of people do it, thus the requirement for this safety device https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/...es-in-vehicles

Quote:
The intelligent speed assistance (ISA) system could reduce fatalities on EU roads by 20%, according to estimates. “ISA will provide a driver with feedback, based on maps and road sign observation, always when the speed limit is exceeded. We do not introduce a speed limiter, but an intelligent system that will make drivers fully aware when they are speeding. This will not only make all of us safer, but also help drivers to avoid speeding tickets”
My 2019 model already has this. It works with GPS and a camera mounted on the front side of the rear view mirror. The camera and some software recognizes speed limit signs and display the speed limit in a nice HUD (heads-up display) on the windshield. You can also set up a nosy alarm but the speed limit on the windshield is enough. The only downside of the system is that it takes 1-2 seconds to change the displayed speed limit info after you passed the sign. So, as long as the radar is more than 100+m after the speed reduction the system can help.

Do you know if one can install such a system on their (older) car?

Someone has packaged a Raspberry Pi in a nice box, add some scripts from GitHub for traffic sign recognition, plug a camera, debug and voila! https://www.autopi.io/use-cases/

So, the solution is possible and exists. Not sure if someone already sells the system ready to mount in the car and use, ask google

Re: Speed Limit Solution

of course they exist, lots of free apps out their like camsam, even waze will warn you, you can also get speed camera detectors.

by default camera warning systems are disabled on all gps's sold here, you can add them as points of interest.

BUT

If you are pulled over the police WILL check, They do actually know what to look for and will check your gps if they suspect, anything odd on your dashboard will be removed and they WILL google what is it, if its any kind of warning device you WILL get a rather large fine and they confiscate it, go on, ask me how I know

so ask yourself, is having camsam / waze running on your nice expensive iphone just to avoid a small fine (assuming you aren't a total cock when you drive) worth it?

Re: Speed Limit Solution

What you are looking for is a TomTom GPS unit. In Ch will it warn you whenever you are over the speed limit. In Germany will it show speed traps that have been reported by users and in France will it only highlight the “high accident risk areas” as warning about a camera would be illegal wink wink...
