What value vehicle for Swiss mountian roads?

As I am planning to maybe move to remoter region of Switzerland, I would most probably require a vehicle to survive. I haven't driven for decades though so I will take lessons all over again etc

Some of my requirements-

1- Must be able to climb Swiss mountain roads
2- Bang for the buck
3- Low maintenance and very reliable
4- Brand that is well supported in Switzerland
5- Don't have a family so number of seats not important but space for transporting my things very important.
6- Should have enough space to spend a night or two in it.

Budget as cheap as possible but maybe 20k? What am I looking at? Minivan? SUV? What sized engine? Hybrids any good?

Edit- Mountain

4WD or AWD needed for the snow. I have a Mini Countryman which does just fine for example... prob a bit small for you. Go to Autoscout, enter 4WD/AWD and your price limits and see what comes up. Ford Kuga, Mazda CX5 etc could be something.

Re: What value vehicle for Swiss mountian roads?

Fiat Panda cross 4x4 seems to be the car of choice for many people in the mountains who could afford to spend more, however a narrow car is so useful passing on single track roads.

There is very little 'need' for 4x4, at 1000m there will probably be about 4 days when it would be useful for a couple of hours before the road is cleared, unless you have a very steep private road, most locals have crappy little FWD cars.

Very true. I bought a VW Polo off the Post Office some years ago. It's never let me down (I live at 1300m) even though the last few hundred metres of road are only snow-ploughed every few days. The chains have come in handy though. A couple of neighbours have trailers which the rest of us can borrow for transporting firewood and the like.

Post Office cars are always very well maintained

Re: What value vehicle for Swiss mountian roads?

SUVs are maybe better for high ground clearance and 4WD/AWD. But be aware that AWD systems in most city SUVs are not that much better than regular cars.

Look at what the locals use in that area. First find where you want to move, then choose the car.

Don't sneer at a Dacia Duster.

I am sorry I live in the mountains, without 4WD you need chains, and even then you won't do as well. We've been here 10 years, and every winter I watch cars without 4WD get stuck, they can not go up and dare not go down. They pull over and wait to be rescued.

The more expensive 4WD car you can get the better. It isn't just about driving 4 wheels, it is also about how those wheels are being driven. I have [admit not a budget] BMW X1. We're about 1200m above sea level. It snows in the winter and stays for at least 3 months, did so for almost 6 one year. Snow ploughs clear the roads as long as it isn't snowing, but they remain very slippery; and everywhere you need/want to go is either uphill or downhill.

Look at the details for the 4WD options for the different car manufacturers. Volvo, BMW and Mercedes are the gold standard; that said on a budget I see quite a few SUBARUs on the road too. The computers they use in cars are like iPhones, they double in power every year. The newer car you get, the better the 4WD handling will be.

I suggest:
  1. Find mountain of choice

  3. Select model

Suzuki Jimny. Good value, reliable and every mountain town has several of them. Mechanics should know them very well.

Need to sleep? It can carry a tent, sleeping pad and bag.

Need to carry stuff? Roof rack, hitch rack/box or for really big stuff pull a trailer.

Re: What value vehicle for Swiss mountian roads?

Look what the true locals, those which live there year round, drive.

From my observation one of the most versatile car is indeed the Fiat Panda 4x4. Old as well as new ones. You drive up some remote valley all the way up to the last alpage, and there it is: a Fiat Panda used by the local farmer.

Another small car is the Suzuki Swift 4x4. Unfortunately Subaru no longer makes the Justy.

We have a '98 Panda 4x4, and have a short road (200m) to our rustico where it is needed in case of mud, snow, or ice.

Good idea but I would like to spread my wings and visit other mountains too. I guess if it works on my lower mountain, it should work on other higher ones too. Will it climb Matterhorn too?

The Panda 4x4 looks sweet for a tiny car.

One word of advise, whatever you buy ensure it has an arm rest between the drivers and the passenger seat. I know that most smaller cars do not have them and personally I think its a very bad decision by the manufacturer/s. I drove one (rental) without it and my right shoulder was numb after some time. This is only if you plan on going for long drives on autoroutes (+Cruise control )

I do not think it will be an issue for shorter drives.
