Importing motorcycle from Germany

Hi everyone!
I'd like to import a Honda VF750 from 1983 from Germany into Switzerland.
Have seen some descriptions of the procedures necessary for this, thanks to everyone who left this information here for posterity!

Before importing it I am trying to find out how difficult the homologation will be -- tried asking Honda Switzerland, tried asking different people at the local Strassenverkehrsamt, however nobody could answer this.

Does anyone know more about this, or has some ideas, or if I am maybe going in the totally wrong direction?

Re: Importing motorcycle from Germany

The motorcycle must meet all the technical requirements when it was first put on the road. Art. 4 VTS. Save some special rules which overrides this general grandfathering rule. As far as I am aware the only rule of concern is that all motorcycles need a rear reflector which must be red and not a triangle.

1983 should not be an issue. 1986 and later up to 2001 will be an issue if the motorcycle has no EU-type approval/CoC (introduced mid 1999, national type approval could still be used till around mid-2001) OR is not according California Spec (not 100% if California spec from that period is fully Swiss compliant) .

From the mid 1980's Switzerland and California had some of the most strict motorcycle emission regulations in the world (AS 1986 1836, FAV 3). When the common market EU-type approval for motorcycles was introduced in the end of the 1990's, Switzerland followed suit (AS 1998 2487, TAFV 3) and took over those regulations. Or to be more exact, the EU followed Switzerland's lead and introduced the emission regulations Switzerland already had for many years.

In case of motorcycles the models for the Swiss market during this period had to be heavily restricted to meet the more stringent emission standards (As said, the emission standards were like EURO-1). As we are speaking about mostly models with carburetors and a simple ignition control, this means such things as airway restrictions, throttle restrictions, smaller jets, exhaust restrictions, and cat converters. Some of those models had, at least on the paper, much less power than its European cousins.

For more details you will have to check the old BAV (which was replaced by the current VTS) and all its changes up to 1983.
Here the original publication (starting at page 821, as numbered, not as in the PDF which starts at 793): https://www.amtsdruckschriften.bar.a...df?id=30001166
and here all the changes:
https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...8/history.html

The pre-1998 AS (Amtliche Samlung) publication have to be looked up in the Federal Archive https://www.amtsdruckschriften.bar.admin.ch/ (Copy the AS number into the search field, narrow down the search to AS only, and restrict the results to the relevant year. The pattern is AS <Year> <First page>). The AS from 1998 or later can be browsed directly https://www.admin.ch/gov/de/start/bu...-sammlung.html

Re: Importing motorcycle from Germany

Some more data points:
http://www.astra2.admin.ch/media/pdf...-27_2418_d.pdf

Looks like the first important change in emission standards was back in October 1977 (if I am not mistaken before that date there were no emission regulations for motorcycles at all)

Next change was October 1983 when the UNECE-R.40 became the applicable emission standard for motorcycles.

Then October 1987 was date the more stringent Swiss FAV3 came fully into force.
