Flights to USA

Has anyone had experience travelling to the USA during the ban. I am a US citizen so should be able to travel there but want to know:

1) Is there a mandatory 2 week quarantine when entering the US?
2) Any difficulties when coming back to Switzerland. Of course we would need to self isolate for 10 days, but this is acceptable
3) Is Swiss flying only to New York? I had booked previously a flight to Boston but it was cancelled in mid-August.

As a U.S. citizen they can't deny you entry to your own country.

Stay tuned for changes to the rules.

As of today, you must enter through one of 15 specific airports and then transit further if that wasn't your final destination. Previously you had to quarantine on arrival, but they changed that a while back.

CDC is releasing guidelines to relax travel restrictions for Shengen in general starting on 14 Sept, including dropping the "only 15 airports" rule and testing, and moving more towards guidance.

Based on the changes coming up, Swiss might change its plans on where it will fly.

Current rule:

Coming up:

Re: Flights to USA

I think , travelling to the US is currently not safe and should be avoided (if you
have to travel for business of familiy reasons, you have to deal with the problem), but as a tourist , i would stay where i am.
When you return from the US, there is still the mandatory quarantine for 14 days (with no payment from your company).

Re: Flights to USA

The current quarantine rule is 10 days upon arrival in CH, but yes it's something to consider if planning a "fun" trip. I assume one can take vacation days instead of unpaid, but that's not really fun either.

Re: Flights to USA

Air Canada has flights from Geneva and Zurich to Montreal and Toronto. From there you can fly to just about any major US city without entering Canada.

US customs and immigrated formalities are done at the Canadian airports..

Re: Flights to USA

Hi OP,

I just returned back to Zurich after spending 2 1/2 months in the US (PA to be exact). Depending on which state you plan to visit, it is just as unsafe there as it is here (or safe there as it is here depending on which state/canton you visit/live in!) In Pa, for example, there is no indoor dining option and masks are obligatory everywhere (That said...very few follow this mandate when walking outdoors).

As for the quarantine here, I called ahead to the Zurich COVID hotline to get more info last week (a week before my arrival). They took my details and I also informed the Canton once I arrived here and gave them my home phone number. I haven't received a phone call yet but my OH did when he quarantined and worked from home 6 weeks ago. That said, I am not taking any chances given the fine but am looking forward to my freedom. 4 more days..

As a reference, I travelled through Newark via Swiss Air and there are 3 flights which operate weekly (as of now).

Best of luck to you!

Re: Flights to USA

Also, I should note...no mandatory quarantine in the US (then again check the state you plan to enter). That said, one is advised to self quarantine but unlike Switzerland, it is not mandatory but elective.

Varies by Canton (oops, I meant state ), check the Covid site(s) of the state(s) you are visiting.

Re: Flights to USA

I just got back for the US yesterday. I travelled from Zurich-Frankfurt and then onto Seattle. Upon arrival in SEA my temperature was taken, and I was given a pamphlet on the CDC recommendations, that was it. There was a good number of passengers on the flight to Frankfurt, but the plane was about 30% full from Frankfurt to Seattle. The Frankfurt airport shops where all closed except one bakery and one newspaper shop.

Washington state was a little shocking. Everything was closed except for takeout, and the shopping malls had recently opened, but not all stores and masks were required everywhere. The stores looked like they were lacking workers, and the changing rooms where all closed. The gyms were closed as well. I then flew to Detroit where the plane was packed. I flew Delta and they keep the middle seat free, but every other seat was taken. I tried to rent a car in DTW but couldn't as they would not allow me to drop it off where I was going so that was a surprise. I travelled to a small farming community where everything was opened except for local swimming pools, and nursing homes.

I took a flight yesterday out of Chicago and there was only 8 people on the flight! We had our own personal flight attendant, and they came by about every couple of minutes it seemed. They were very attentive and accommodating. The 4 of us in economy class had to seat in the back of the plane to balance it out I guess, but we could move about when we reached cruising altitude. As far as flying experience goes, it was the best flight ever. However, I can't imagine how the airline industry is going to make it through this and I am so thankful that they are still flying as I would hate to be stuck in one place or another not being able to get to family. I had to fill out a form with my personal information on it on the plane and received a pamphlet from BAG with instructions on it. Upon arrival and went through the normal procedure of going through passport control. No checks, or anything different. The man at the Pass control said my address and asked if he were to visit he could find me at this address? A replied " Yes, but no guarantees that I will open the door" he smiled, and I left.

That was it, no other questions or comments. I am now stuck in the basement, catching up on the Englishforum, and trying to make the most of my time before the craziness starts in 9 days.

Re: Flights to USA

Thanks to everyone who posted the very helpful information here. My purpose is to visit my parents who just moved to a new house and I wanted to see them since we had not seen each other since January.

I was mostly interested to know what kind of time commitment I needed to have. If I needed to travel there for 2 weeks plus to account for a quarantine and then 10 days when I arrived back....it might have been difficult with work. The 10 days in Switzerland is about one week of work, I can do home office during that time. Thanks to the information, I will probably then go and travel to the US for roughly 1 week.
