Sell car to a buyer from France

I have one potential buyer that is interested in buying my car. It is a 2018 VW Atlas (I brought the car with me from USA when I moved last year with my job). The buyer lives in France and wants to wire the payment to my bank account and pick up the car here in Switzerland. I will draft a contract agreement. My understanding is that I need to cancel the registration and return the plates to the local Strassenverkehrsamt. Is there anything I should be aware of (aside from money in the bank before I hand over the keys? I don’t know what the rules are with respect to export/import taxes so I will include an ex-works clause in the contract. Any help will be much appreciated.

Do you not think it odd he'd wire you @40k without seeing the car?

If he pays before picking it up, then no.

Do not hand over the keys, until you have the money.

It sounds suspicious.

Edit: Or hand over your carte gris!

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

Much better to accept cash on collection like everybody else in C.H. He will need export plates.

I sold a BMW to the brother of a Forum Member, he was a dealer in Poland, he arrived with German Export plates, paid cash & never heard anything again. A US spec car will be virtually impossible to register in France, but thats not your problem.

40 grand's worth? I guess it can go under the bed to reduce the wealth tax.

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

If you are not doing cash, check, double check and triple check with the bank that the money is really irreversibly there. There have been a few scams where the money appears in your account but then later isn’t verified and therefore gets deducted again by your own bank. And the cute lady with the nice nails at the teller doesn’t always know this when you go and ask. If possible, even get it in writing from your bank that the money is there there.

No, you just deposit it at the Bank, they may ask you where the money is from, show the sales contract. 40k in CH cash is not that unusual, why do you think there is there a 1000 chf note, when the largest note in the UK is Ł50?

I would always do that if the car was a long way away, makes the seller less likely to lie about the cars condition,

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

It screams SCAM to me, there's loads of these going around. As capetown says, you have to be certain that there is no way that the payment can be reversed.

Did the potential buyer explain in detail why they ca't come to see the car and pay cash? That always seems to be a good indication of scam.

EDIT. I have a suspicious one right now, I sell wine amongst other things at my shop in Zürich, I have an enquiry for 40 bottles of special and expensive champagne. They want to pay over the phone with credit card (they claim to live in Zürich) and a friend will collect later. Everything seems odd about it.

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

Apparently, in some scams, they use a stolen credit card, or the owner of the card reports it stolen, and the money will be debited regardless of it being cleared.
Basically transfers can be recalled for a large number of reasons, days or weeks later.

That is why you should only ever except CASH.

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

The whole situation smells bad.

There's a lockdown in France so far until the end of the year. There are some exceptions for travel quarantine for regions close to the border, for example Grand Est (Alsace), Baden-Wurttemberg and Basel. Graubunden is not a border with France. I don't see how the buyer can come shopping to CH.

The least bad situation is the idiot buyer pays, cannot travel to collect the car and asks his money back. A waste of time. Worst case, fraud.

No local buyers? The 2nd best selling car in CH is the VW Tiguan. There's a high demand for these things.

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

For those who ask: if you bring more than 10k in cash over the border do you need to declare it. God know what processes this might trigger with French customs, so I am not surprised the buyer wants to avoid that. Bank wird upfront however just screams fraud...

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

Cash rules in France are tighter than CH.

You cannot* pay more than 3,000 EUR in cash for any transaction. Same applies to withdrawing it from a normal bank.

To the French buyer, bringing that much cash would seem like an impossibility.

However... still sounds too much like a scam to me.

Kind regards

Ian

Re: Sell car to a buyer from France

I'm curious to know how close the buyer would need to be to the border for the deal to appear legit and indeed what would make a buyer within Switzerland inherently more secure, avoiding national stereotypes or slurs.

I can :-)

I looked this up and it seems the limit is now €1000 (for a French tax-resident in a professional transaction). No limit on non-professional transactions and 15k for non-tax-residents.

I don't like getting cash. It just means I have to go to the bank and you never know, maybe the cash is counterfeit.
