got my car, needed a winch already

I didn't get the winch after all ...

but I decided to try the car in snow for the first time on Friday (Christmas)

First bit of snow and I see a Duster on a slope, perched against a tree, 10 meters below the road. Two police standing at the top waiting for help.

All those winch jokes came back to haunt me on Christmas day

Seriously though, I chose the AWD and proper winter tires and they are performing well compared to some of the other vehicles I've seen this weekend. I went up into the mountains three days in a row and each time, I see so many vehicles that can't stay on their side of the road because they have the wrong vehicle, wrong tire or wrong driver or all of the above.

I took the vehicle out on some icy sections of road, well away from any cliffs or stray cats, to test the braking and traction control, I was reasonably satisfied.

Then I parked near a small Col covered in ice and watched other vehicles coming over the top, their wheels frantically stopping and starting as their ABS tried to get them ready for the corner they hadn't anticipated.

natural avalanches, not Dusters coming down the mountain

Just because anybody can buy one, doesn't mean anybody can drive one

Snow? What is this guy talking about?

Sounded like fun. Well, your side of it anyway.
On the other hand: More excitement on the side of the others. You don't really have as much to write home about, do you.

These are not people in search of perfection. I'm sure they were all slumming it in Q5s, Q7s and X5s

I think you'll find that the tyres make MUCH more of a difference than AWD...

I have a Duster (4x4) and a C-class (RWD) amongst some others (do rallies, so have a few cars). The instant you fit winter boots on either, they can both cope with some powder...

I would write that differently: the AWD is simply not much use if you have the wrong tires. I suspect that one of the BMWs I saw coming down the hill at me in a slalom maneuver back and forth over the center line was using summer tires.

Once you do have the right tires, you may be happy without the AWD but from time to time you get a little extra benefit if you do have it.

If enough people have both winter tires and AWD then you get herd immunity. If you are the only one with these things then you are stuck behind 1000 cars bogged down in front of you

It makes a huge difference to my tyre wear - normal exit from my street is a sharp steep uphill turn onto a busy road, prior to AWD I went through front tyres at a shocking rate, and in the wet it was a total PITA to pull out.

Yup!
And you can put the pedal to the metal without burning rubber.

Faggio, please watch the latest episode of the Grand Tour. The modified Bentley is exactly what you're looking for.

Sooner or later you have to rebuild the AWD system though... like this guy. He shows the chain is stretched at the beginning. Some newer vehicles have plastic components in there too, sadly, they can wear down just like your tires.

This comparison of AWD systems on snow is very well produced and interesting to watch but they basically start by trying to work out which one is fastest out of BMW, Audi and a Jaguar. When you think about it, being fastest is not the most critical choice for a buyer. Safety and long term reliability are more important and you can't get a feel for that in a slick video like this. But it is fun to watch and I'm sure they had fun producing it.
