Cheapest car rent

Hi,

Which is by your experience the cheapest way to rent a car (super ugly car, 200'000 km) needed just for 12 hours/1 day to visit a friend needed to visit a friend difficult to reach with public transports.
Distance both ways would be almost 200km

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question, but if your intended 200km would take you over the Swiss border, it's advisable to check with any potential car hire company, beforehand, whether this is permitted.

Hi, thank you for your reply!

It's indeed slightly over the border but that actually is not my main concern, because I can literally cross the border by walking and I'd be almost arrived with few bus stations
So no problem parking the car potentially still in CH

I always drive hire cars over the border, it's normal being Switzerland is surrounded by other countries.

Re: Cheapest car rent

If you're resident in Switzerland and hire a car in Switzerland, there's no legal issue with driving into neighbouring countries. You'd just need to check that the car hire company permits this, as mentioned upthread, but generally it should be no problem. Driving in Eastern Europe and beyond is sometimes banned under the contractual conditions.

By law, you are not permitted to hire a car in the EU and drive it in Switzerland if you are resident in Switzerland. There are ways around this but by and large it's just not worth the hassle.

There was an issue 3-4 years ago with EU residents hiring a Swiss reg car & going into the EU with a Swiss car. Most of the hire cars at Geneva Airport were German registered that year, a year later back to just Swiss cars & they are quite happy to let EU residents take them over the border.

For a short rent that is normal, it drops to 30-40 a day for 10 days, small or med cars about the same price. I always check online Airports usually the cheapest point. National / ALAMO, HERTZ / THRIFTY / DOLLAR, UNIRENT / EUOPCAR any of those can be the cheapest even if the Thrifty car will say Hertz on the stickers!

I think its in Chapter 11. Not sure about the Swiss Hertz that is based in 8952 Schlieren it may be a franchise.

Re: Cheapest car rent

Go to any garage or car dealer and ask for a loaner. Do it myself on occasion.

We rented from Hertz for a few months last year - yes it's a franchise, so completely separate it seems - just a trading name. And my local taxi firm rented me a (small) car for under 100 francs for two days.

Re: Cheapest car rent

Ok, so one idea might be to just go spontaneously to any garage and ask. If you have any name please let me know

When I give my car in for service, my garage will rent me a car for the day for 30 CHF. If you're a regular client they may do that for you.

Not much use to you if you're in Zurich but for Baslers there is twingorent who will give you a banger for CHF 44 a day (personally I'd pay the extra CHF 10 for a Golf without adverts)

Re: Cheapest car rent

To flesh out the garage idea a bit, most garages (big ones and small independent ones) normally have one or more loaner cars that they use for clients who need to leave their car for the day but need a car.

I would ask if you could rent the car for a Saturday (not normally a working day) and return it at the end of the day (keys in the mail box etc.). They might be willing to do so. Assuming you return it with a full tank of gas etc.

I would start with the small independent ones as in my experience they tend to be more flexible and motivated than an employee at AMAG.
