A few years ago I had some slightly more expensive Continental winters, without doing enough checks. They were crap - very noisy and still didn't seem to give much grip (which is subjective since I didn't have a significant adverse event, but they felt wrong on cornering and braking). | | | | | Tyres are a bit like ski boots, what’s good for one isn’t good for the other.
Car manufacturers give recommendations by car model, albeit I’m sure there is a vested interest in these recommendations but I’ve never had a problem buying the recommended tyre.

We used riefendirekt for our old car....they were fine. Had them delivered to the installer, no problem.
For our new car, we got tires and rims as part of the lease. Not the least expensive option, but easiest for us. We paid for convenience.

Does anyone know of a good walk-in brick and mortar store for tires?
I ordered from reifendirekt, as i needed to swap out 2 tires for mfk.
First thing was that i called the garage where they were sent (supposedly 2 minutes away) to make an appointment, only to find out they changed locations 4 years ago and are now 25 minutes away.
I drove out there this afternoon to find that reifendirekt had sent the wrong tires- wrong season, wrong brand, wrong size.
Now i've got to find a pair of tires asap so that i can go show it at the STVA before my 30 day window runs out.
In the meantime, I've got two cheap tires stinking up the interior of my car and that I guess ill have to send back to DE

I guess if that’s par for the course it’s less hassle ordering from your car dealer.

I use Reifendirekt.ch they are not perfect, delivery can be variable, though a bit better recently. Also their fitting partners most rip you off on fitting unless you say you want ReifenDirekt fitting prices. We bought our own tyre fitting machine off ricardo.ch because for a small car fitting is a lot when a decent new tyre might cost 30chf. Also if you have ever had a wheel/tyre with leaks it is very satisfying and time saving to DIY. No queueing, delays or sketchy fees.
ADAC do good tyre tests, performance varies a lot, but what I found interesting is that winter tyres are good at stopping in the wet. At least as good as summer tyres in many cases. The age of the rubber will affect stopping distance a lot, irrespective of tread depth left.
I have not found a cheap way of disposing of old tyres. Large tyres cost as much as small ones not fair is it! any tips?

They have more "features" to clear the water vs. the summer ones (which are more "slick"), thus improving contact with the surface.
It's only natural they are more efficient at stopping in the wet.
