Let me guess - you asked for a test drive and you been offered back seat and clean shoes check and no-touch-my car policy ?

pretty standard for BWM seller I guess when he/she loves the car and the "other-love" ask him to let it go

Driving and buying Audi is much easier - there is no love and it's just a 4-wheel-stroller - sellers let it go first moment they can

Why would someone act like this for a 530 diesel wagon? Almost sure it's white or black. What's so special in a family car to fall in love?

Better value, more reliable, true work horses... but not fun to drive .
I've test driven all the Volkswagen group cars and Merc A and C class and none of them have the driving dynamics of a BMW.
I agree with your evaluation. I rented for multiple weekends different cars from the brands you mentioned (plus Seat, Skoda, Ford), and I found the BMWs having fantastic driving dynamics, very comfortable and very responsive (both the F11 and the F31).
It is really a pity, given its current owner.
Then I was pleasantly surprised by the Mercedes comfort (ok, I did not drove any of them since 1995, and they started appearing again in rental agencies I use from ~2016).
Volkswagen: why the hell they always slightly bend to the left/right? how they forgot how to make a car neutral?

To the OP: you have some minimal money concerns, so you should go with the F11. More than enough comfort on Swiss roads, it is a bit more agile in the mountain roads, it has enough power for whatever overtaking you are going to do, unless you travel often to Germany, the F31 is an overkill.
At the end of their life, they will have similar residual value (which will not cover whatever small accidents / little problems that are statistically bound to happen when you own a car for more than 5 years in a radius of 300 km from AG plates ).

Disclaimer: I do not own a car, they are just tools to me.
