Whose privacy got violated?

The number plate isn't really private, and they don't say it was the holder or owner.

I see a photo of a person holding the fuel nozzle while presumably filling the tank of the car.

Maybe privacy was not the proper term. It's something about presumption of innocence and photos, but I don't know the right term. I think I cannot place announces with photos of people offering a reward for information on their whereabouts.

I may be wrong but I understood the police only publishes photos of people when it's a fugitive with known an proven crimes, or highly violent crimes when there's no other way to find the suspect(s). I think the gas station manager went a bit cowboy.

The curious situaiton is that the robbery would never happen if gas were served only after you leave your credit card data....as any day after 20h00. But the business model of the company is forcing customers to pay inside with the hope they spend a bit more on cigarettes, chocolates or whatever.

It's private porperty, it's about a repeat offender who's been filmed in the act, and the poster has a deterrent effect. One of the customers may indeed know something. I find that reasonable as long as it isn't put online.

No, police put up search warrants without court verdict. For instance after robberies where cctv footage is blurry, where time/swiftness is usually important.

And what if people don't use CC? This isn't the US. There's no point in feeding the CC company 5% of the revenue for basically doing nothing.

(theft, not robbery)

My wife did the same thing, filled it up, went into the shop, picked up a few things, paid for them at the till (but not the gas) and left. About a month later we got a letter asking for payment.

She sent me to pay, because she was so embarrassed.
Cue the anecdote about the guy who meets a friend he hasn't seen in years. They get chatting and finally decide to go off for a beer to celebrate their reunion - taking the friend's car.

Many hours later the phone rings and the angry filling station staff want to know when he's going to move his **** car.

Re: I forgot to pay for petrol

At SOCAR, I filled the tank, moved the car to the parking lot with the intention of having a coffee, eating a croissant and leaving the fuel tank at the disposal of the next driver. When I saw the lady at the counter explaining to me that an alarm sounds when a car is in motion without having yet paid for the fuel.

Certainly. I was totally distracted. We know that the petrol pump doesn’t work if the gas is not paid. Moving the car doesn’t help the next

Re: I forgot to pay for petrol

Unless they have changed it, in BC Canada you must pay first, which is incredibly inconvenient if the pumps don’t have a credit card function.

You have to go in, give them the cash or your credit card, go out fill up your tank, go back in to get your change or do cc transaction.

Apparently this is because a thief knocked down, ran over and killed a teenaged employee who tried to stop him.

While I appreciate the sentiment this solves a problem by assuming everyone is a crook.

once in Germany I fueled up my Bertha(or was it Brunhilda, can't remember) and decided to park it on the side to make space for other fuelers. All action took may be 2 or 3 minutes. I then entered the shop to pay for the dinosaur's juice and the cashier promptly informed me that he already rang the police and they have my details as he thought I ran away.
Which doesn't make sense anyway because usually you cannot pump gas before the pump is set to zero.

But I guess it happens a lot. Most cashiers nowadays ask whether you also had gas when you only buy something else.

First world problems, in Malta there is an attendant who fills your car with petrol.

Included, or like in Italy when you suddently end up paying 20 cents per liter more because of this valuable service?

I recall being flabbergasted the first time I came across this in Italy, and seeing that people did actually use it.

I could never work out why anyone (bar, perhaps, mobility-impaired drivers) would deliberately go to the more expensive, served, pump. Do they simply enjoy paying more for the same product, or what?

May be they feel they've succeed in life?

I always volunteer to fill up with petrol on longer drives - so I can maximise the time I'm not actually sitting in the car.

Price of unleaded petrol is €1.34 in Malta, virtually identical price in CH with self service. Clever to be able to charge the same price without the same service.

You're perhaps missing the point - in Italy some petrol stations have two lines, with one set of pumps being served, and charging significantly higher prices, right next to the cheaper self-service pumps.
