Driving to Romania (when I can)

So I'm super hopeful that this Pandemic will begin to ease up here by the summer.

So I'm starting to think of a place to drive to.
I'm considering driving from Zurich to Romania (I'll figure out the details in coming months).

My question's are:
* Anyone done this and have pointers / suggestions
* My car has swiss plates, I have a swiss Drivers license, I have Swiss auto insurance --- any reason to think I can't take my car into Romania
* Are the roads in Romania good enough, I'm sure they aren't as awesomely maintained as Switzerland's roads, but is there any reason I should worry about road conditions while there?

Again - just starting my research and thought I'd ask.

OH - I'm considering going during the month of July this year --- again, that all depends on Covid.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

I knew a couple who did charity work in Timisoara and drove out there at least 5 times a year.

I think your biggest obstacles would be covid and rising fuel costs.

Absolutely none.

Where should I begin....nope, not good enough. We've been promised a better infrastructure since 1990. I don't think there's any politician that didn't promise that in their campaign.
Anyways, it depends where, some are and some are not. Main roads/national roads are OK.

I don't know if you'll be able without a covid test or/and quarantine. I can look up the latest regulations when you'll need, at one point I gave up reading the news because the covid situation seemed to get worse not better, so I lost hope I'm going to be able to visit my family any time soon.

You can ask more here, there are a few Romanians on the forum (I'm not the only one lol) so hopefully they'll see your questions and answer each of them.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

if you are driving, make sure to take out a good roadside assistance cover.

Hopefully you are driving SUV or something sturdy, there is always a chance you will end up on one of those roads with more pot holes than emmental.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

I shredded a tyre in a really deep pothole in Transylvania once.

Try not to drive at night on more remote roads - otherwise the roads are fine.

No reason to worry driving is no problem the odd pothole but nice country enjoy.

I drove from Timisoara to Constanta back in 2000 that was fun but worked there a lot in last few years roads much better.

Watch out for vampires, especially in Transilvania. Best is to always carry a silver knife.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

I've done this trip last year. No issues crossing the borders, insurance wise and all. You will make good progress until you reach the country's border - from there on there is a patchy autobahn to Sibiu. Roads are generally slow, as they cross cities and towns.

If you venture off the major roads (which are quite good), a car with sturdier rough-road suspension can make a significant difference in safety and comfort. July can get quite hot on the plains.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

Ok - I'm about 1 month out from driving to Romania and I have a bunch of things to research and am hoping (to reduce my research) someone maybe has done part of this trip and can get me to an answer faster than I can find it.....

I'll be:
- driving from Zurich to the center of Romania.
- route consists of diving through: Germany, Austria, Hungary, and into Romania
- Fully vaccinated with moderna (one of the 3 most known vaccines)

I, most likely, will drive through each of these countries with limited stops. What I mean is, I don't plan on spending more then 10hrs per country.

My questions (and these will be consistent until I make the trip):
* Where can I find COVID entry requirements per country?
* If I'm vaccinated, can I make the trip without getting a COVID test
* If for some reason I have to spend more then 24hrs in one of these countries, do the rules change and I need to xxxxxxxx due to COVID (testing, fill out forms, notify someone...)

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

Maybe use this https://reopen.europa.eu/en/from-to/CHE/ROU/AUT,DEU,HUN
But the best is too look at national websites 1 week before going. 1 month is a long time and maybe there will be the european green pass which should allow all travel. Would avoid staying in Hungary as it seems a mess in terms of rules.

Re: Driving to Romania (when I can)

I know I have been to all 3 recently for work and confirmation of vaccine was Fine no Problems. But you need to check the government websites to be on the safe side as things can change.

Transalpina and Transfagarasan, very popular destination for motor-bikers.

I was surprised when I rode over Transalpina recently (well, fall of 2019) to find that a good portion of it isn't paved. And a huge portion of the paved section was in worse shape than the unpaved part. Good thing I was on my dual sport motorcycle

Transfagarasan is certainly the more popular one with most motorcyclists

Continuing to derail this thread....

The north side was freshly paved

The unpaved bit after crossing the pass

And the southern end, with everyone trying to avoid the biggest of the holes

I have no idea how's like lately. You mean Transfagarasan I suppose.

Here some reviews.
https://www.tripadvisor.ch/Attractio...n_Romania.html

I still believe that if you're up only for a motorbike trip you really miss the spirit of the country. Riding roads, nah ya. Hoooow interesting.

Why not to Prague? I bet it's more pleasant. I have Swiss friends who enjoy making motorbike trips to Prague.
