Nichtbeachten eines lichsignals [running a red light]

I just received a 250 Sfr fine in the mail. It is for running a red light which I know not to do. General Guisan Quai / General Wille Strasse.

The fine is for light being red for 1.7 seconds which I know is a massive amount in relative terms. Trying to recollect this I believe I was delayed crossing the junction because of cars bunched up in front of me. I think someone was reverse parking ahead of them causing this delay.

I was actually fined 5 years ago at the same spot for the same offence. That time I dabbed the throttle because I had a heavy load on the roof rack which I wasn't confident to brake on. That translated to a 0.5 second offence. By comparison 1.7 seconds is an eternity.

Is there a mechanism for querying a fine without not paying it? I know spending any time on this is not worth it, but this is just rude.

Regards,

Andrew

So, in fact you admit guilt.

I asked a specific question, didn't I? Maybe I wasn't clear.

In answer to your question you can appeal your ticket, all the way to the supreme Court if you so wished. Problem is, at every stage they are going to show you a couple of pictures of you running a red. You can start the appeal here.

What is rude?

You are not supposed to cross even a green light if the street ahead of you if is not free enough to get across what ever the red light is for (crossing, pedestrian passing ....). So if you're caught standing in the way that's already enough for a fine.
With you it sounds like you crossed at yellow, got blitzed, then got stuck and were blitzed the second time still standing there.

The answer is you can query but it will be a waste of time as you already mentioned. And depending how insistent you are, money.

So you entered the controlled area of the junction without your way being clear to cross it. This is itself contrary to the highway code, so is not in any way a valid excuse for still being in the junction area after the light has turned red.

I think it would be technically possible to be prosecuted for it even without the red light camera, although in practice you'd probably need to have done so blatantly and right in front of a police car for them to do so.

Be thankful it's just 250 francs - if your actions had caused a problem leading to an accident (imagine if you got stuck in the middle of the junction when crossing traffic had a green light) it could have been _much_ worse.

On the top right of the notification you got, there's a QR code. Use it, it contains your car plate and the fine number, there are more details there and a button to appeal.
