There's a learning track near to Zic Zac's in Allschwil! I think they call it the Pump Track.

If it has anything to do with how pump tracks are, I'd guess that it wouldn't be quite beginner friendly

OP: You can try starting in empty supermarket parkings on Sundays perhaps? Just make sure that there's no beginner driver practising there in the same time, or it won't end well.

Edit: I found the place you're talking about Landers, you're right, they do have a track where you can develop your skills (https://velosolutions.com/skills-bike-features/), intended for beginners. But it depends whether the OP knows already how to cycle or not.

Pump Track I think is ironic. This is what the Polizei website says:

The traffic garden is ideal for practicing in the protected area. The use of motorless vehicles and vehicle-like devices, such as inline skates, scooters, playground equipment, etc., is permitted in the traffic garden.

The traffic instructors of the Basel-Stadt Cantonal Police conduct training sessions in the traffic garden with all 4th and 5th primary classes. Therefore, the traffic garden may not be used by others during school hours.

Edit: too slow, too late, IslanderInTheMountains already noticed that

The Verkehrsgarten (the thing near the ZicZac) is aimed at kids to learn the traffic rules (not to acquire the skill of not falling from your bike). I'd recommend Lange Erlen (not on a Sunday afternoon, though...), empty supermarket parking lots, any schoolyard when there's no school. If it's for children, they're usually allowed to ride in parks. Adults, not so much. But any quiet side street will do.

To me there's a difference between:
Please could you recommend some safe places to practice cycling in Basel for a newbie?
and
Please could you recommend some safe places in Basel to practice cycling for a newbie?

But we don't really know which was most appropriate.

Re: Safe cycling practice places Basel

For longer stretches without cars, one can also cycle up on the Bruderholz, towards Predigerhof. It is an especially nice place for kids to practice cycling and weaving politely through pedestrians. One can find a 5k or so loop with minimal hills.

Of course, if the request was to learn how to bike in traffic, this suggestion is moot.

St Jakob park is great for learning again (where I first got back on my bike). Also the many long cycling paths at the Wiese/Lange Erlen.

Good luck! Iím on my bike daily and hadnít ridden one since I was a child when we moved here. Life is good on a bike.

Re: Safe cycling practice places Basel

take the occasion to learn riding with a correct seat height. Plenty of youtube videos about that.

I was doing it wrong and it's getting some time getting used to it, but i think it's helping my knee.

Ok :-) For cycling in Basel, the main piece of advice I can give is either avoid roads with tram tracks entirely but if you can't then cross the tracks at as much of a right angle as you can. The danger level will depend on the width of your tyres. Avoid the trams too :-) Be aware of pedestrians walking into the road without looking.

The other thing is that in Switzerland even if the road turns left and there's a junction and it appears you have right of way to turn left because there're no change in the road markings, you have to signal that you're turning left. These junctions are marked with a road sign but you should know that if you've passed your driving test.

You can turn right on red if there's a little yellow sign indicating that.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Where exactly in St Jacob Park did you practice cycling

? It looks like a stadium from the pics and am just a bit confused. Thank you, N

She's probably talking about the area south of the Stadium. A few mostly straight roads there, with little traffic.
