International Driving Permit

What is an IDP?

An International Driving Permit is a permit that allows you to drive in countries where a UK licence alone is not sufficient. These countries include the USA, Brazil and Japan, among others.

I didn't realise that the UK DL was not enough to drive in the US! It made me wonder where UK and CH DLs are valid.

Re: International Driving Permit

it's a mostly-pointless addition to an existing licence that might be helpful when driving in countries where Latin characters are not the norm.

I've rented around the world and never needed anything more than the Swiss licence.

Re: International Driving Permit

We got one for our trip to the US, but the car hire company never asked for them, they just accepted our Swiss. Always good to have one outside of Europe I think though.

Could it be because Brits drive on the wrong side of the road?

Thought MC or Visa was the required card?

Where do you get that information from? Cos I suspect it may not be entirely correct.

I've rented cars in the US quite a few times over the years, even back when I was still living in the UK. Never once did I have the IDP, just the UK (later Swiss) driving licence. It never occurred to me that it might be needed, and clearly was not, in practice, required by the rental companies.

Re: International Driving Permit

With a paper Swiss license you need one for the US, as it's not in English like the plastic one.

Also, one or two US states require IDP even with the plastic one (I can recall which).

https://www.ch.ch/en/international-driving-licence/

"An international driving licence is recommended when driving in countries outside Europe. An international licence is highly recommended when driving in certain countries, such as Albania, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. In other countries the international driving licence is compulsory. Many car-hire firms also require you to have an international driving licence."

I have the old Swiss paper license and have rented cars in the US for years with it, without issue. The last rental agency guy even admired it. No IDP. Last time just before the pandemic, unless something recently changed.

Re: International Driving Permit

I mean if you can just get an International Driving Permit by paying for it without test it can't be up to much.

I have rented without problem in East Africa, Greece, USA on a paper UK licence. Swiss card licence was also accepted throughout Europe, USA and Australia...

Re: International Driving Permit

"People who drive in the U.S. must have a valid driver's license. If you're a foreign visitor, some states require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a valid license from your own country. Contact the motor vehicle department of each state you will be driving to find out its requirements."

It is just a translation and explanation of your normal licence. You also have to carry your normal licence.

After I converted to Swiss license, it works everywhere. From Europe to Africa and America. They always associate Switzerland with quality and precision, no swindle, so apparently, the driving styles from here must be equally superior in their mind as well.

The point of an international driving licence is to translate and explain your normal one. Nothing to do with the quality of your licence.

They should come and check rush hour on the A1.

Don't get me wrong, driving 80-100kph while maintaining a 4 metres safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, certainly requires some level of precision!

But it's true, people do believe that the Swiss way of driving is a calm one, like you said. Until they witness the motorway at 7.30am
