Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

Hi, I will be changing my UK license shortly to a Swiss one. I read somewhere that they will keep your old one when exchanging new. For personal reasons I would much rather keep my old license (I don't care if its stamped on or whatever).

Is this possible to request? And if so, how?

Thanks!

Re: Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

In Vaud you get the old one back with a sticker on it saying something like "not valid for use in Switzerland".

It is probably the same thing in Zurich.

Someone else to agree or disagree with this answer?

Re: Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

The normal practice is for them to return the license to the issuing authority. Other than Verbier above I've not heard of anyone retaining theirs.

I retained my US license.

P.S. It's ZH. ZRH is the airport.

Re: Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

Just to provide some help to others that might want information, I reached out to the STVA and was told:

Gemäss dem Wiener Abkommen über den Strassenverkehr und der Schweizer Verkehrszulassungsverordnung (Art. 44 Abs. 4 VZV) müssen wir den Führerausweis nach dem Umtausch an die zuständige Behörde im Ausland zurück senden.

basically: no, you cannot.

It depends on the origin of the licence.

EU licences are sent back to the issuing authority, non-EU are handed back with the «not valid in Switzerland» sticker on them.
How they treat UK licences post Brexit I don’t know.

UK licenses get sent back to the DVLA, and you get de-registered from them.

I asked for a copy of my UK license from the DVLA, and was told that my UK license was no longer valid.

I also think it depends on the agreement the Swiss have with other governments. My non-EU licence was sent back home. But it was exchanged without a problem ... I had more difficulty switching my GE licence for a VD one ...

I converted my UK licence to CH one in 2013.
Prior to return to the uk in 2017 I contacted DVLA and they said your UK licence is still valid.
So all I did was apply for a replacement licence that arrived before I returned to uk.
I still have the Swiss licence in a draw somewhere.

Somehow my uk licence was never returned to DVLA when I handed it in for my Swiss licence.

That happened to me when I changed my license in 1994, still shows as valid at my old address on DVLA's system.

It’s got your address on it. You are supposed to notify every move.

I don't have my address on mine, unless it's encoded somewhere.

I informed the SAN about my new address when i moved, it's on my carte gris.. And the tax bill .. But they didn't give me a new license.

It doesn't on mine. When I moved, I enquired on how to change my license and was told that moving between cantons does not require a license change.

I recently lost my license, and applied for a replacement in my new canton - 2 days later I got my shiny new card.

May be different for old paper licenses, but the card ones are not canton dependent.

In Zurich, I got my US license back with a sticker (easily removable), but this was when I arrived in 2006.

Re: Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

Wife and I changed from US to Swiss license in Schaffhausen in 2019. They told us they would go to the US consulate in Bern and couldn't tell us any more. My wife got hers back by mail from some Swiss authority a few months later. Mine was never seen again...

As I need it to drive in the US, I ordered a replacement from home and it was delivered in a few weeks.

Frustrating that they don't have answers (wife speaks fluent German, so it wasn't lost in translation) and the process is inconsistent.

A Swiss license is valid in the US.

Just tell them you lost it.

It will cost you to get a replacement of course

Re: Is it possible to request to keep old car license (ZRH)

It was many years ago, but when I got my Swiss licence, the authorities sent my British licence to the UK consulate in Geneva, who gave me a phone call and invited me to collect it again, as they didn't know what to do with it.
I've actually got quite a collection of licences as no-one ever retained them.
