No, Zurich is a congested airport. Airlines cannot simply operate when they want. And in many cases their schedule may appeal to a number of their customers. I know you don’t like it, but …
You know there's a pandemic on right?

Which only goes to show that Zürich isn't really an important market for them, seeing they schedule the early hours for Zürich so they can serve more important destinations at more attractive times.
7am is not an early flight at all. If I have to travel for business within Europe, I'd much rather take a 7am flight from Zurich and be at my destination just after 9am than to be forced to fly the night before and stay over. And those flights (in normal times) tend to be full of business people who share my opinion.

I'd rather start my working day by flying at 9am but that's just me.
Can't imagine many businessmen/women needing to fly to Heraklion for a morning meeting :-) What I wanted to express was that when there were only a handful of flights per day from Zurich and then airlines, Swiss in particular, started to put on more (holiday) flights they seemed to be at inconvenient/impossible times. Maybe the 7am flights appeal to people who want to get there early but not to us as we'd find it impossible to use public transport to get to the airport in time.

That these flights fly early in order to be somewhere else at a reasonable time makes sense to me so thanks for whoever brought that to my attention.

7am early? Not in the aviation world - that’s why I don’t work in it anymore! Loved it, but not the 3am starts

I've booked many clients to Heraklion for conferences at the UoC School of Medicine.

I did my fair share of 7am business flights and then decided that I much prefer to spend the night before in a hotel. It doesn’t cost much more with the hotel and usually ends up cheaper as all the business people push the prices of the early morning flights up and Swiss know that if the company is paying no one is really complaining. Not having to get up at 5am and having to tiptoe around in the dark to avoid waking up my sleeping family is a huge bonus.
I made an exception a few years ago because my CEO insisted that we travel together on the earliest flight to London city, and I just got on the train to the airport at around 6am when I got the message that the flight was cancelled because of fog Would not have happened or been so bad if flew the night before.

Anyway, airlines have to make the most of the limited number of aircrafts that are kept in service. If an aircraft is flying, then it will be worked from 6am to midnight.

I think you need to look at this on a case by case basis.

Maybe on a typical business flight it makes sense. But some of those early flights are to typical holiday destinations, operating seasonally and then not even every day and not offering business class accommodation. I don't really buy the explanation that "business travellers prefer it that way".

Basel is actually worse for this type of thing than Zurich.
