Early morning public transportation to airport

Hi- for a 7am flight, I can see that there are trains from HB to the airport, but it doesn't look like there is transport from Wollishofen to HB early enough.

Is Uber reliable at 4:30 in the morning or should I book a regular taxi?

Hoping to find a cheaper way to get to the airport and I am surprised public transportation doesn't start earlier!

Thanks!

Re: Early morning public transportation to airport

S-Bahn can take you from Wollishofen SBB to Flughafen at 5:24, in normal times it should be more than enough to reach the gate, particularly if you have hand luggage and do the online check-in.

If your flight is on Saturday or Sunday morning check the night service, there should be at least one train per hour.

The majority of the people who work at the Airport take public transport, you don't need to go that early as you may not even be able to get inside the airport. Arriving by 6.00 should give ample time

I would double check this.

Many airlines have suspended the online check-in so you can stand in the queue and spread the virus. they can check your vaccination pass or test status.

Checking in the day before may be an option though.

I'm more surprised that in a time when airlines are desperate for travellers and income that they seem to only put on flights at ridiculous times of the morning. It's like they want to go out of business.

Where are you flying at 7am? The destination (and whether you have bags to check) will impact the necessary margin at airport. In some cases you can print boarding pass at home, they check documents at the gate, getting there 6am will be fine.

Not sure where you are in Wollishofen but it's not far to walk to Bahnhof Enge and there are early transport solutions from there.

Hi - I do need to check a bag and it is not an intra-European flight so I would feel most comfortable with close to 2 hours ahead.

That is exactly why they schedule from 7 AM, The more flights they can operate per day, with the same number of staff the more money they can make. If they price it right they can fill most of their seats, most of the time.

Aircraft, which are a huge capital investment, don’t make money when they sit on the ground.

Europe is unique where almost all airports have curfews, go to somewhere like Dubai where flights are scheduled throughout the night.

I'm talking about the one flight per day at 7am which was going on. Either that or it's an evening flight which gets you to your destination at 23:00.

Yes but that aircraft and crew goes on to fly to other destinations throughout the day, they don’t just do your 7am flight.

And if you really want to be bored to death, I could explain how ‘slots’ are allocated, maintained, sold and lost.

In a nutshell once you have a slot at a congested airport like Zürich you use what you have, until the opportunity comes up to improve them.

But in practice it’s much more complicated than that.

I would be careful with this at the moment, especially if flying Swiss and you have baggage to check. They have completely changed the formerly really efficient system for baggage check in.

In May we arrived from the hotel at just after 6 for a 7am flight and they ended up pulling us out of line to get our bags checked in. Going through security was a breeze as usual.

In June we gave ourselves closer to 2 hours for a 1230 Saturday flight and still ended up getting pulled out of line (although we were only a few minutes from the front).

Arguably you could just rock up last minute and get pulled out of line, but on the Saturday you’d have been so far from the desks that you wouldn’t have heard them call your flight.

Re: Early morning public transportation to airport

If you are flying on Swiss, you can check in and drop off your bag at the airport the evening before the flight. With your bag already checked and boarding pass in hand you should have no issues arriving on that first train.

It's not as easy as that. Airlines fight like hell over slots and airports, and they affect cost. And once a slot is allocated it's not an easy thing to change. In short, it's not up to the airline to choose their departure times.

*Edit - I see that @bowlie posted something similar.

I have a PM asking to be bored to tears about slots and scheduling.

I offer a link to the airline industry views:

Which only goes to show that Zürich isn't really an important market for them, seeing they schedule the early hours for Zürich so they can serve more important destinations at more attractive times.

No, Zurich is a congested airport. Airlines cannot simply operate when they want. And in many cases their schedule may appeal to a number of their customers. I know you don’t like it, but …
