Sold my car to dealer, then new car owner claimed on my insurance

As stated above I sold my car to a dealer, this dealer or the new car owner then claimed the car’s scratches on my car insurance. I only found out afterwards and insurance said this is legal and there’s nothing I can do about it. This happened 5 years ago so I really don’t remember anything else about it.
About to sell another car privately now, is this something I need to watch out for? Is this something specific to exchange of car ownership and does it affect me in any way? I’ve tried to Google it and search on here but couldn’t find an answer.
Thank you

No idea how that could happen, some of the story is possibly missing. Reducing cover to third party only would do the trick.

Did you fail to cancel the plates (and thus the insurance)?

Are you saying that a claim was made on your insurance 5 years after the sale?

Call the insurance after the car is sold and ask them to cancel the policy?

You need to return the plates for the insurance to be cancelled

That doesn’t release the insurance company from their liabilities while the car was insured, which seems to be what’s happened here.
Maybe the OP signed some form or agreement accepting liability and allowing the new owner/garage to claim?

The question would be 'did you return the plates' ? I just bought a car and I needed a copy of the previous insurance card to switch the insurance (not sure if that was 100% necessary, but it was done online with my insurance broker) - and then the previous owner and I both went together to the road registration office, took the plates off the car, went inside, signed the documents, they confirmed the new insurance (all transmitted electronically) and then they gave me the new plates. The old owner dropped the old plates into the return box on the way out of the office, and we put the new plates on the car and from that point onwards, the car is insured in my name, attached to my plates.
