Even more reason to get a proper car and treat it well. I really regret getting rid of some cars over the years...

Just like Blackberries or CRT TVs....I see those appreciated a lot, too.

They will all be expensive divas to maintain. Especially if you get a new car now, which are by definition some sort of hybrid ("Mild Hybrid")

They will switch into limp-mode the moment they detect something is wrong with the SCR or whatever part of the exhaust gas cleaning chemical lab living on their undersides is acting up.

If you want something collectable, I'd suggest simpler stuff like whiskey, knives or antiques.

A car (BEV or ICE) of this day certainly is not and never will be.

Re: What car?

Had some interesting experiences today... messaged a few dealers...

One replied almost immediately, but with zero interest. They don't have the mustang for test drivers (only the electric car), and that's it. If you want to order it, we can, but can't see it, can't touch it, can't drive it.

Two didnt reply to the phone (16:00ish), so I've emailed them instead (in English).

All these are the big ones listed on the ford main site. I know there's a tiny small dealer near me; so may call them tomorrow.

Next I'll try tesla, let's see if they are more interested in speaking to me...

M.

EDIT:

Have you tried buying a CRT lately? I haven... needed one for the retro game room. A good quality CRT in good nick costs as much as a flat panel (if not more). Don't know about blackberries, but I can tell you a series 1 iPhone costs a pretty penny... Some of the videogames I have are valued at several thousand francs a pop...

Re: What car?

Its so fun hearing people wanting to buy a tesla because of their fast acceleration while reading "doing 110 in 60" threads on EF.

Switzerland is the second worst country on earth to have a fast car, first one is the US where you immediately go to jail for big speeding.

Lots of not sensible people out there.

I had a funny experience with a diesel car earlier today. It's really damned slow to accelerate, so I had to floor it. Anyway, it took sooooo long to reach 120 km/h that I looked to the speedometer and still at 100 some seconds later, 107 had to look to the road ahead and then 132. I slow down a bit, a climb comes and now I'm doing 90 in a 120 km/h zone.

In a certain way, the low power diesel car is more dangerous than my own car where I reach 60 or 120 quickly and then just stay there, even accelerate a bit on the turns to have some fun.

Ever driven a loaded Renault Megane combi diesel from Mobility?

@Spinal: I want to test drive a Toyota Yaris GR just for curiosity. A quick AWD hatchback, maybe you stop missing the VW gti

Renault Megane is a great car. It's all about being in the right gear in the right place on the road.

Germany is the only place where you can legally floor it and still it's always overcrowded and poisoned with never ending road works.

Buying a fast car based on driving it in Germany once a year is not smart.

Toyota CH offer test drives and put a price on the toy.

If there's a problem, it's that they already sold all the production for several months https://de.toyota.ch/new-cars/gr-yaris/index.json

PS. there are several of them already on autoscout, from new to 10K km https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/autos/...e=GR&vehtyp=10

Re: What car?

I agree with the suggestions for an M2 or Mini cooper S. I've had both.

M2 is fast.

Cooper S is cheaper, but feels even faster!

I never said I was buying a car to drive once a year... but even then, that could be fun.

Taking a RWD V8 around the 'ring could be fun... much more of a challenge than the electrical gubbins most cars have.

When you have as many cars as I do, even if I drive a different one each week, I could last a while withouth driving the same car twice. This is my hobby, I don't get cars just to get to work...

Some people waste money on stamps, or golf clubs, or watches, or whatnot... I spend money on other things

Makes sense now

If I were you, I would try Yaris GR with a short shift gearbox and proper suspension setup.

None of that M2 or other nonsense is even close

I would definitely consider the GR Yaris, I've heard it's incredible!

Having said that, it doesn't match the OPs requirement in top speed nor 0-110km/h (officially)

0-100km/h: 5.2
top speed: 230 km/h

Also, I'm not sure, amazing as it is, how much time I would like to spend on the motorway with a 1.6L, 3 pot motor.

I would opt for the M2

Re: What car?

I'd like to mention at this point that speed or performance or capability is not the same as "sporty".

I have 4 cars, my sportiest (or second sportiest it's a close call) car is by far the slowest (Honda S2000).

My most powerful car is the second slowest, and the heaviest and least sporty by a long stretch.

While sensation definitely gets augmented by amount of g-forces, actual feedback from the car is much more important. To me sport means effort, and having everything easy and with no feedback is just going fast, but doesn't translate to "sporty driving" where I hone my skills or enjoy myself.

The problem is the 4-seat requirement. M2 is great but I've been greatly disillusioned with BMW as of late. But being honest if you do require 4 seats and a sporty car at this price range it's kind of a singular option.

Design or quality control? I must say that my M2 was very simple inside, but so well screwed together. I'm on my second X5, and while a great car and with so much technology (A bit too much IMO), I don't think they are that well put together. (Does it make a difference that they are built in the US?)

It's a new car, but recently took it back with a not unsubstantial snagging list. Nothing major, but irritating at this price point. No such issues with the M2. The paint even felt different!

Re: What car?

Design, engines, gearboxes.

The M3 is the new M5 (for quite some time now), the M5 is for all intents and purposes an M7, and the M8 is just too expensive and not large enough inside.

The M2 is the only saving grace in the lineup and you have to go Competition or CS to be worth it, otherwise it feels like a 235 (or 240).

Nothing in the normal range interests me, they're more appliances than anything else IMHO, the design has been downhill for quite some time, and sh1t like subscription-based options is crazytown and unacceptable business practices that I will not reward with a purchase.

Carplay as a subscription? They even tried to do HEATED SEATS as a subscription.

I grew up in, I've owned 2 (one from new) and I don't think I'm ever walking in a dealer again. And that makes me sad TBH

Yes, buy them otherwise they'll stop making them. Everyone wants a lightweight manual sportscar but then they make one and they sell screw all of them.

You know, I was talking to a friend over lunch (more moaning about how non-responsive the dealers I contacted are), and he asked "why not another subau?"

I love my subaru, and while it's not in CH, it's a pleasure to drive... off road, it puts a grin on my face...

So the BRZ is now on the shortlist

I still have a hankering for a big V8... but it doesn't seem to be an easy car to order (the only dealer that has actually replied estimated a 12-month+ lead time)
