BMW Drive Recorder - thoughts or experience?

Ah Friday, my favourite day of the week!

I have on my car the option to buy for 299 Francs an unlimited drive recorder feature, that should record events before and after any incident.

It apparently can record using the 4 cameras simultaneously, and I guess could be used with an insurance claim.

I asked my OH about it, and she was not so keen (to be fair she is generally the incident), but what about EFers?

Does any one have this and would you recommended it?

If you’re not racing around and consider yourself a careful driver, why not?
Can you get an insurance discount?

Re: BMW Drive Recorder - thoughts or experience?

Does it detect and record damages (like minor impacts) done to the car while parked and locked?

Ahhh, it's the new operating system. Once my car goes out of warranty I'll upgrade to be able to do this and other stuff

I think there's also the option to give a voice command and record a 30 sec clip.

Paying 300 CHF so that BMW gets and can use your data? That is worse than the Tesla nonsense where my neighbour is proud of having allegedly 20 cameras in his ugly X.

The same attitude that made BMW lost market share for several years for refusing to add android auto......until last year

I don't think that is possible, today there is already the possibility to wake up the car remotely and take surround pictures of where you lost, I mean parked it - but on demand, and it takes a few mins.

As for the recording whilst driving, I read it is all automatic in certain settings.

Having to fumble for a record button just before an impending shunt might be a bit optimistic (unless you can voice activate it with "oh sugar")

I have an aftermarket dashcam in my car. It records in 10-minute segments. Absent any human intervention, when the memory card is full, it deletes the oldest recordings to make room for the newest recording.

If the camera is subject to a sudden bump (as in an accident), or if I press the 'record' button (for example, if I've witnessed someone else's accident), the current ten-minute clip is automatically moved to a 'saved' directory where it won't be overwritten/deleted.

Re: BMW Drive Recorder - thoughts or experience?

Drive recorder is active all the time, recording on a continuous 40 second loop. In the event of an accident it will save 20 seconds preceeding and 20 seconds after the bump. You can also start the recording manually and it will record from a selected camera or all 4 for a 360 degree film. It works when reversing but doesn’t work when the car is turned off like Telsa’s do. Keep in mind that as well as recording someone hitting you, it will also collect evidence against you

Re: BMW Drive Recorder - thoughts or experience?

Serious question.
With the camera recording everything, has it altered your driving style from say ‘pushing on’ to more sedate?

It certainly slowed our kids down. "Don't forget your Mum's car records everything" works every time.
