GB number plate sticker no longer valid abroad

"British motorists driving outside the UK must now remove old-style GB stickers or cover them up.

Instead they should display a UK sticker or have the UK identifier on their number plate.

The UK government guidance has been in place since Tuesday 28 September.

"It might only be a matter of replacing two letters, but this is a significant change for drivers who in normal times take their cars outside the UK," said RAC spokesman Rod Dennis.

The new rules state that any driver with a GB sticker on their car now needs to replace it with a new UK one if they are taking their vehicle abroad.

"Drivers also need to remember that number plates featuring the blue band and letters 'GB' next to the European golden stars are also no longer valid," Mr Dennis warned."

So do I now need to stick one on my Swiss car?

this is so that everyone thinks the car is from Ukraine. British people being ashamed to be abroad should like this. They'll get treated better by europreans.

I'm sure Boris Johnson didn't expect that. I don't want to exaggerate but British motorists are doomed.

I believe that the country’s official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It’s ISO (a respected organisation based in Geneva) two letter code is “UK”.

So what do you have against Northern Ireland?

All of this talk about “Team GB” etc. has always struck me as being very funny, as no such country actually exists.

You voted for it, you got it.

Oh and the code for Ukraine is UA.

UK is also a reserved ISO code for the UK. Being a special flower, they have 2 ISO codes

Better than people thinking that you're from China with the CH sticker.

I'm sure I've told this story before, I was filling up at a petrol station in Guildford and a cabbie said:

I was at a campsite in France and an English family walked past our pitch.

"Where are they from?" asked the teenage daughter.

"China, obviously", replied the father knowingly.

Technically yes, if you drive abroad The French and German police don't care, but the It alians can be sticklers over this.

And legally, you need a full sized one even for motorcycles and mopeds for Italy.

When I first saw CH in France back in the mid '70s, I thought they were from Czechoslovakia!

I used to drive a Swiss plated car without a CH badge for the 12 years I lived in Italy. No one was ever bothered. They also weren't bothered to hand out tickets when I parked illegally

Just referring to an article in Swiss info. I've no personal experience of it as both my cars have a CH sticker. Although one of them is quite small.

Sounds like it was a change requested by the UK

"In June, the UK government applied to the United Nations for the change to be made under the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “Changing the national identifier from GB to UK symbolises our unity as a nation and is part of a wider move towards using the UK signifier across government.”"

You'd think they'd keep it and say it means "Good-bye" "Gone-Brexit" etc

Re: GB number plate sticker no longer valid abroad

I‘m surprised this is an issue.

20 years ago all Swiss cars were required to have a CH sticker einen if they never left the country. It would mean a fail at the MFK without a sticker.

CH is not in the EU and can use their old style sticker if they want.

Today few cars here carry a CH sticker and I have driven a number of times across France and Germany to the UK without a sticker - without problem.

Nor have I put stickers over my headlights like Brits do going to the continent. Although most modern cars can switch the low beam direction electrically.
