Europe including British vs the rest, e.g. Asia

If you are travelling with a network airline like Swiss or Lufthansa, Air France, etc yhey will attempt to get you to your destination. Often they will successfully but the timing may stink.

With the so called low cost airlines their only obligation is to give you a refund regardless that you just want to get to your destination and perhaps compensation. But for that you have to apply and wait, and reject a voucher, and wait, and reject a voucher again, etc.

I don’t include that Spanish airline “British” Airlines in this as they are worse than the LCCs.

For EasyJet I've not had trouble getting a refund and any additional expenses covered. But it can take a while. I got caught by vouchers in the early days of the pandemic - and they'll only refund those as new vouchers.

People sometimes confuse compensation with refunds/expenses. They're two different processes.

It’s the same, but here it makes the news. Big parts of Asia are still on a very reduced schedule with many restrictions in place but the bits that are open experience the same.

The US is also a total chaos for air travel, but the school schootings are bigger news.

I could not see a list of cancelled flights yet. If someone has seen/sees would be great if you could share the link.

Ah that is another story. We always do the journey in one go, but we don't have to go up north- either Surrey or East Midlands. But yes, I am aware many here on EF do not have that option.

Just buy Champagne and drink it when you get to UK or back home! Simple.

It's not like people don't know the risks is it? This was a major pandemic, thousands were affected and many people lost their lives so it's just a case of putting things in perspective. I make a plan B everytime I make a plan A.

I have a business related to the travel industry and it's a nightmare restarting what used to be a flourishing entity. I don't know who is available, what has restarted and what hasn't, where to go for transportation, etc. I will admit that the biggest problem is the people part, I can spend days on end on the phone to solve these puzzles whilst my booking (with huge expectations and paid in advance) edges closer... it's hell, believe me.

Just had a couple of flights cancelled but was rebooked on an earlier flight. As both flights are often packed, some people must have lucked out.

All Zurich- San Francisco flights are cancelled.

If you are booked on a LX flight that has been cancelled you will have heard from them by now.

Its an own goal by many of these airlines that for no forced reason required their employees to be vaccinated. Now we are seeing the chickens come home to roost. (Swiss, United, American come to mind)

According to this news, there is only one weekly flight to san francisco being cancelled, less flights on routes to Danzig, Dresden or Warschau.
From Geneva there will be 5 flights less per week to london then before.
Between July and October there will be no flights between Zurich and Nürnberg.
Between Zurich and Vienna all Swiss Flights will be done by austrian airlines
in the timespan of July 04th to Sep 04 th 2022.

From WRS

Quote:

Weekend travel around Europe was chaotic with airlines cancelling hundreds of flights and stranding many travellers.

SWISS International Airlines is adding to the pain and has announced that it will be cancelling around 100 flights between July and August.

The unsuspecting passengers were told yesterday afternoon. It’s likely to affect 30,000 people, says the airline.

It’s mainly short-haul, but the weekly flight from Zurich to San Francisco is cancelled.

From Geneva, there’ll be five fewer flights a week to London.

The main reason for the problems is not enough staff. The airlines fired hundreds during the pandemic - and now can’t fill positions fast enough.

Well, at least they announce this in a timely manner. Not as with some other airlines when people are already at the airport.....

Swiss only operate one weekly flight to San Francisco so anyone travelling there will have to use an alternative airline.

As Roegner says they are at least giving people advanced notice so they have time to make alternative arrangements unlike other airlines who have been leaving people high and dry.

Re: Swiss cancels flights for Summer 2022

We always use the "name" carriers (Lufthansa, Swiss, ANA, Cathay, Singapore, Emirates, and so on). A lifetime ago, I worked for one of the better UK carriers, and you certainly got what you paid for back then, and nowadays, it's certainly even more true.

It sucks that so many flights are cancelled and that prices are higher, yet safety should always be the number one consideration, followed by reliability of getting there in a reasonable manner. If price is your number one factor for choosing, you are likely to get bitten in the ass at some point, whether stranded at an airport, unexpected cancellations without a back up plan, and then having to spend extra money anyway.

Of course, if you are traveling solo (or with a like minded adult), and time is not a concern, and final destination is flexible, that it's all just an adventure, and airport waits and hotel reservations don't matter, going cheap can work... but for folks traveling with family, and trying to maximise holiday time, it's generally not worth the "savings."
