Swiss cancels flights for Summer 2022

Last week I got tickets for 2 summer trips via Swiss/Edelweiss. Today Blick advises me to shudder in fear

Well, I don't tremble but I'm bored. We know this afternoon which flights got cancelled Also, the reason for cancelled flights is not a surprise. People got fired from airlines, they found something else to do with their lives, and now not enough personnel.

Quote:
Swiss cancels holiday flights for thousands of passengers today!

Summer vacation starts in about a month. Many Swiss people will finally be traveling again this year after two years of corona restrictions. The anticipation of the beach and the sea is huge among the families. But anyone who wants to travel with the airline Swiss suddenly has to tremble about the summer holidays!

Blick knows: Swiss is canceling around 100 flights in July and August! This Tuesday afternoon, the unsuspecting passengers should be informed. According to Blick information, around 30,000 passengers are likely to be affected. The airline Swiss confirmed on request on Tuesday morning that a corresponding announcement should follow today.

According to the Lufthansa subsidiary, more than half of the passengers affected should be able to switch to another plane. With more than 15,000 passengers, it is therefore a matter of changing aircraft. The other passengers are hit harder: their flights are cancelled.

Not enough staff

The reason for the flight cancellations at the best travel time is the shortage of staff.
Swiss fired hundreds of flight attendants in 2021. This is now taking revenge because the demand for flights has risen sharply. The airline is currently trying to hire new crew members quickly. But time is against the Swiss.

Re: Swiss cancels flights for Summer 2022

Wonder if this comment on the Blick site is true I've got Swiss flights to Egypt in early Aug, as well as hotels, so if cancelled its going to be a nightmare try to find alternatives.

A ticket purchase is a purchase contract. Not enough staff is mismanagement and mistakes by Swiss and not "force majeure". Every buyer of a canceled ticket has the right, in addition to the refund, to receive at least the following compensation: short-haul 250€, medium-haul 400€, long-haul 600€. And just don't give up.

Something's rotten here. Swiss airlines got federal assistance back on 2020.....so, the tax money bought what?

Quote:
COVID-19: Federal Council fleshes out support for airlines

Bern, 29.04.2020 - During its meeting on 29 April 2020, the Federal Council decided to provide support to the airlines Swiss and Edelweiss to bridge liquidity shortfalls. In order to resume flight operations, airlines are dependent on the services provided by aviation-related businesses at the national airports. Consequently, these businesses should also receive support if necessary, provided that the stringent conditions imposed by the Confederation can be met.

Re: Swiss cancels flights for Summer 2022

It's something being seen across the industry. Many airlines have been overbooking flights, KLM put in a pause on bookings, easyJet have been cancelling flights last minute, enormous queues at Dublin Airport. I've just decided to try and avoid flying until the industry gets its house in order.

Its an own goal by many of these airlines that for no forced reason required their employees to be vaccinated. Now we are seeing the chickens come home to roost. (Swiss, United, American come to mind)

Not everyone has the luxury of being able to get to where they need to go by other means.

We are very lucky to have that option, others aren’t.

Of course- to UK from Switzerland either by car, or by train- is an option for the vast majority.

Assuming you are actually travelling to the U.K. and have the extra time. It take us 2 days each way in the car and costs a lot more than flying.

As I said we are lucky to have that option but it still takes two days either end of a visit for us to travel to see my family.
The vast majority of posters on EF are probably not wanting to travel to the uk and even those that are may not have the luxury of having the time needed to travel by car or train so plane travel îs their only option.

I have the option to take the train to Hamburg, then a Transatlantic cruise to NYC, and then fly to Mexico....Transatlantic flights are not mandatory

Well, as reported by 20min. Ato, it's your fault for choosing to fly to Dresden and not to a sunny coast

Quote:
Half of the passengers affected by the cancellations wanted to fly to Vienna with Swiss. Since Swiss is now canceling these flights, the trips are being carried out by sister company Austrian Airlines. There will also be one long-haul flight to San Francisco per week from Zurich, and the frequency of flights will also be reduced for the destinations Gdansk, Dresden and Warsaw. Only Nuremberg temporarily removed Swiss from the program completely between July and October. The frequency of flights from Geneva to London will be reduced by five flights per week.

Our flight to Gatwick was cancelled just as we were about to head to the airport. So we hopped into the car and drove. Fortunately, we have three drivers. Went through the tunnel at about 10pm - empty almost, apart from Romanian registered vans. It was quite a feat booking the tickets, filling in the API and uploading covid certificates (still was required Folkestone->Calais) using my mobile in the back of the car.

Fuel, tolls and crossing still cost less than we'd paid for the plane tickets, which we've applied for a refund. I've applied for compensation but I'm not expecting any.
