Special ebike insurance: Should I get it?

Ebike users: Do you buy special insurance for your ebikes, or do you depend on what your household contents insurance covers?

Have you ever needed to file a claim for your ebike?

I believe the normal household insurance covers theft of bicycles from your home, but not if you are out and about. So that is one case to consider. I don't have extra insurance for my bikes (no e-bikes), but I also don't leave them unattended.

Considering e-bikes are equivalent to low powered motorcycles, the insurance that matters is the accident one.

Re: Special ebike insurance: Should I get it?

It depends on (i) the coverage of your household insurance, and (ii) the coverage you want, and (iii) the type of ebike you have.

If you have an ebike with a yellow licence plate, there is mandatory insurance (at least for Zurich) you will need to have anyway. Effectively, it is personal liability towards third parties (injury or damage) of up to a limited amount (presumably around CHF 2 million).

Besides that it depends on what you want to insure:
- personal liability insurance always makes sense (even if you have mandatory insurance, it might be interesting to top up beyond CHF 2 million).
- household insurance (against damage/theft at home; some household insurances exclude ebikes with yellow licence plates (best ask them).
- an addition to household insurance for theft outside your home. Again some household insurances exclude ebikes with yellow licence plates, or the insured amounts need to be increased to cover your bike.
- roadside assistance

Re: Special ebike insurance: Should I get it?

ebikes with max speed of 25km (pedelecs) are covered by your household insurance for theft (check the max allowed) and for accident (damage to other parties) by your mandatory civil responsibility insurance, which is also covered by your household insurance.

However, most decent ebikes cost over Fr 2.5k which will not be covered by your household insurance, neither will breakdowns (if you are several 100kms from home and your 28kg ebike breaks down, it is not plain sailing to get home - trust me, I've been there!).

So, TCS, ACS and several other insurance companies offer full coverage for around Fr 100 / annum. My insurance company (AXA) offers an extension to our household insurance to cover theft for up to Fr 3k and breakdown / recovery insurance for around Fr 100 / year, but for any ebike in the household (we have 2).

ebikes with max speed of up to 45km (yellow plates) are a different kettle of fish, call your insurer...

Good luck!
