Well yes, I did wonder about this when bowlie posted.

I have never bought a car without a vignette being provided by the Dealer.
And one also gets a full gas tank and a gift

Remember you don't always need one. Many people in Basle buy one when they don't actually need to.

Also, they slap the vignette on your screen good and hard - making removing them a pig and impossible to transfer to another vehicle during the year as they come to bits. I always make it less sticky by sticking it to my jeans or the floor mats before mounting.
I'm less worried about the fact that I can't transfer the vignette to another vehicle (which is, in any case, against the rules). But I'm quite anal-retentive and like my stickers to be placed neatly in the windscreen. The folks at the border don't seem to give a damn (very un-Swiss of them) and just slap it on any old way.

That is a very big generalization, how many vignettes have you had badly stuck on at the border.

They have no right to stick anything anywhere in your car without express permission

To be fair, when you use the German A5/Swiss A2 or France A35/Swiss A3 highway border crossing you need one. https://fedro.maps.arcgis.com/apps/w...899ceaa08eb80e

In case of the France/Swiss border crossing it is a bit of a pedantry, specially as you do not need one for the Rheinfelden crossing when you leave at the first exit.

Hair dryers have many uses. With patience though.
My preferred method for the last 10 years is a sharp bladed scraper available in the hardware section of COOP for ~CHF 2. Its never scratched the glass and it removes all residue (just use a wet wipe to lubricate the area).

\yes of course you need one for the Swiss roads that require one. At the French A35 or German crossing you on't need to have one if you can avoid those roads.

The deal is that neither at the French A35 nor the German A5 crossing are you able to avoid "those roads". If you end up at those crossing you have to buy a vignette if you do not have one (or turn around immediately, do not go over start, do not collect CHF 2000).

I guess I've just got lucky all these years.
