I had the previous version M240i. So much fun in that one. Perhaps 2nd hand ones are well priced as the new version is now being delivered? But the new version does not come in a convertible, what a shame!

Yes, on the upside does it get assembled in Japan on Mazdas line... which means the panels will actually fit unlike say on a Ferrari. On the downside: Why on earth buy a parts bin special if you can get a perfectly fine MX5 directly from Mazda?

And in all honesty: Eyebeebee is right - Literally everyone who has ever driven one knows that the Boxster is the best two seater convertible on the market (and has been for generations). Competition got less over the years as housewives buy SUVs these days... and Porsche kept on refining it. Even the most hated engine, the 2 liter four cylinder, is technically absolutely brilliant.
So I guess no experience with the 124? As to your point, one thing in favour of the 124 is that it offers an automatic gearbox. In daily driving, I am not sure I can be bothered going manual again. If one wants automatic in the MX5, one has to buy this targa version.

And I don't care how good the Boxster allegedly is. Not going to happen.

But an Audi TT or a Mini is manly enough?

You can also look for a used 370Z convertible, not too expensive and very fun to drive, beefy engine etc.

Re: Car nerds: Sporty 2-seater convertible for year-round use?

S2000 is an excellent choice, but little space in the cabin and not so fast. It is reliable as rocks though - I've had mine since 2015 and had zero actual problems. Changed a timing chain tensioner for 100 CHF very easily when the rattling started, done regular oil changes, and brake changes (track days). That's it.

Boxster is arguably a better car to drive, and better put together, but it will be more expensive to maintain without question.

First gen Z4 is a great car - especially the 3.2 M, the next ones I don't like.

I would personally also stay away from ANY car that was not designed originally as a 2-seater convertible - they're also shaky hackjobs and the styling never looks good.

Alfa 4c looks interesting and sporty, but it has zero space for things (not an exaggeration, it actually has no luggage capacity).

Long story short, if you want a sporty convertible you get a Boxster. If you like the Japanese thing, you do an MX5 and if you want something faster you get an S2000.

Lastly, I would not cross-shop BMW 1/2 series convertibles, Boxsters, 911, and Ferrari's - they might appear to serve the same purpose and could be on similar budgets, but they are very different propositions and ownership experiences.

Is it OK for you if I just don't like it and think it is too expensive?

Thanks for everybody's input. MX-5 RF is currently in lead. And probably long discussions with the missus coming ...

If it's an MX5, go for a red one. Don't know the color name but Mazda has one of the most exquisite red paints these days.

If I ever order a car in custom color, I'll just say 2020 Mazda red hahaha

Oh, I giggled at one of those at Central from the tram just today. But as a car, it was quite nice. Hope his missus has a lot of understanding

I have to say the features options look quite crap at Mazda. Looks like 3 colours and 3 set "packages" with no way to combine.

No worries, options are not needed after you see this rolling on the street:

No car thread is complete without mention of the venerable Nissan Qashqai, or if you want it in cabriolet format, the Nissan Murano.

Go for the 1.5 with soft top. As all great roads in Switzerland have a speed limit of max. 80 km/h, this is all you need and probably one of the rare roadsters that allows you to use its full potential.

I know. Comparing a Qashqai with a Murano is like comparing a Ferrari 250 GTO with a Mondial.

It's almost like that white paint was designed to highlight the body panel gaps

That 2020 Mazda red looks really nice on that fancy Fiat.

I'm Irish green with jealousy...
