Need a bike - Veloboersen [bike market] and stores

One of the great pleasures of living in Switzerland is the possibility of a car free life. After three years here my body and bank account are all the better for it. Finding a second hand bike that you dont mind leaving locked out on street in all weather can be a pain though. That's where the Veloboerse comes in handy. It's basically a market run by IG Velo the bicycle advocacy group, where they take a commission on each bike sold, and you get some confidence that you are buying a non-stolen and roadworthy bike. The first markets of the season are on Saturday 1st April. I have been to the one in Helvetiaplatz, 8004 Zurich before and it usually has a good range available (beaters to race machines). The following link has a list of other Veloboersen for Saturday.

Hello Vips,

One place to look for second hand bikes is Helvetiaplatz flea market on Saturdays. Probably you should expect too many answers about the origins of the bikes on sale.

Re: Need a bike? - Veloboersen [bike market]

I just came back from there about 10 minutes ago. Not sure if I missed something, but there were only a few more bikes than what I saw at the regular Helvetiaplatz flee market three weeks ago.

I really wanted to buy a men's bike today, but did not see much to choose from.

Re: Need a bike - Veloboersen [bike market] and stores

We got three bicycles from Helvetiaplatz, Zurich on 5th May. Reached at around 12. Most of the cheap cycles had gone. The cheapest one we saw was going for CHF 170. However there were good cycles available for 250+. The place is worth a visit however for the best deals arrive early.

Happy Cycling !!

Thanks for the reply. We'll check out HP again. Seems like the best bet to find cheap bikes.

Re: Need a bike - Veloboersen [bike market] and stores

I'm looking for a reasonably good quality mountain bike. I'd go anywhere between 750-1500 CHF.

I'm not sure about buying a 2nd hand bike at auction because it seems like the costs for servicing forks, suspension etc make it a bit hit and miss.

I was thinking one of the Scott Scale 2008 models but I'm not sure if a hard tail is a good idea for a solid 3+ months of mountain biking.

I'd really appreciate if anyone in the know could give me some pointers on how to select the "right" bike for you?

In general if you want to use the bike for proper off road then look for Shimano LX or SRAM X7 or better components.

Check that the gear shifting is smooth with no chain jump when riding in a particular gear.

If the bike has disc brakes cycle the brake lever a few times and make sure you can feel a positive contact point at the lever. The wheels should turn freely without the pads rubbing on the disc. It is reasonably normal to have to readjust this if you remove a wheel.

Check the suspension that it cycles well through its travel, and that the rebound works smoothly.

Check the suspension stanchions that there is no damage and that it is smooth to run in and out of the dust boots.

Check that the wheels run reasonably true. Differentiate between the wheel running true and the tyre running true. A minor error in seating of the tyre can look like the wheel is bent when it is actually only the tyre.

Check for play in the rear triangle of a full suspension bike.

Check for play in bottom bracket and the headset.

In general providing the frame is sound most other things can be replaced. Some at larger cost then others. But if you are using a bike offroad then you need to count with a little maintenance and occasional replacement parts.

If you are interested I will have a full suspension Trek Fuel EX8 for sale in the next few weeks. The bike is two years old and has been regularly serviced and maintained. The only wear that I have on it at the moment is the chain and I am waiting for a new one to come so that it runs the way it did the day I bought it before I sell it.
