CH stickers on back of car

Can anybody help me with the regulation with regards to the size of the white CH sticker that needs to be stuck to the back of your car when crossing the border?

The big stickers look rather unsightly, especially on a dark vehicle and I'd prefer the smaller one, but only if it's legal.

Minimum size:
Each letter has to be at least 4cm x 8cm with the letters being 1cm thick. The sticker is at least 17.5cm x 11.5 cm.

Re: CH stickers on back of car

You can also get magnetic stickers... although i'm not sure where to buy them from in Switzerland. We had a GB sticker on our UK car - never fell off, or moved and of course, easily removable, without damage to the paintwork.

Maybe someone else can give details of where to get them out here...

I agree, a big white sticker on the back of the car looks nasty (as do all stickers ) - to that end, in the 8 years of running a car here in Basel, I have never been stopped in FR, DE, UK or CH for not having a CH on my boot - My view is the number plate has a swiss flag on it and that is enough.

I've seen some silver letter ones but not sure if they are legal or not

I agree with Pat. I have never been stopped for not having a CH sticker. Not even in the UK. (Which surprises me as the good ol' British plod seem to stop people for anything these days)

Agree with the above, never had a CH sticker and never had any problems. I think my Cornish flag sticker is quite adequate, thank you very much.

Re: CH stickers on back of car

Until about 10 years ago it was compulsory to have a 'CH' sticker on your vehicle - your car would fail the test (MFK) without one.

This has changed and I have no sticker despite not only passing the MFK twice, but having driven to a number of European countries.

Take a look at how many foreign cars here don't have nationality stickers too...

Re: CH stickers on back of car

Lived here for 4 years now and never bothered to buy a CH sticker, lived for 11 years in Germany before that and never bothered with a DE one there. Driven around a lot of Europe over this time and never had anyone comment that I needed a sticker. It seems that this is one piece of legislation that's not too rigourously enforced now.

Re: CH stickers on back of car

This is an interesting one! Was cautioned at the Italy border for not having one with Swiss Plates but other than that no problems anywhere with either Swiss Plates or UK without stickers.

My Father in Law (bless his soul) used to drive around the UK with a CH sticker on his UK registered car when I teased him his response was
"because I am proud of my country, isn't it" I miss him

I've heard that story too and I also saw a Swiss car being turned away at the French/Swiss border of St. Louis/Basel... well what I thought anyway, they were having a discussion whilst pointing to the back of the car. The car then did a u-turn.

Interestingly I didn't pay the congestion charge whilst I was in London for the day over Christmas... they took a picture of my front number plate which as you know the Swiss plate doesn't show the country and about two weeks later, got a fine from the Congestion Charge for London thing. The letter was written in German, showing a colour pic of the front my vehicle and the fine converted to CHF! So having no CH sticker may not help avoid any fines either!!

Here in France we see a fiar number of french-resident Swiss who have gone to the bother of getting french plates for their cars ("compulsory" after 6 months, I think) who have put a CH sticker on their car to show their swissness!

We do the opposite.. we are often in Burgundy with our Swiss plates and have french flag stickers on the cars to show our "non Swiss-ness"!

I don't think they make them. I've looked in shops and on Richardo.ch/ebay for one before and not seen anything.

Oh I love a good challenge, took me a few minutes but I finally located a magnetic CH sticker

From the Automobile Club of Switzerland and it only costs 6.80 chf. (5.50 for members). Plus 6.- chf. delivery charges. (I just ordered mine )

Re: CH stickers on back of car

Well I received my "magnetic" CH sticker in the mail yesterday and I'm happy to report it looks and works great. The magnetic sticker looks no different than a normal "sticky back" sticker. It's perfect for those who don't want to have a CH permanently attached to the back of the car but would like to keep in line with the law for those day trips over the boarder outside of Switzerland.
