I know about the chf 40 motorway tax here, but if you have a ch registered car, what other annual taxes do you have to pay?

You'll have to pay verkehrssteuer (Sp?) or road tax. It varies from kanton to kanton, but is usually determined by the weight of your car multiplied by the Kanton's MFK factor.

As a guideline, I'm in Baselland, my car weighs approx 1570 kg (according to the grey ownership paper- i dispute this, it should be a lot lighter according to Manufacturer's figures) and I paid approx 660 CHF for the year. So not cheap, and something you might wish to bear in mind before you buy that Hummer...

And of course, there's car insurance to add on to this...

My car is an Alfa Romeo 147. Apparently weighing 1275 kg according to its "logbook". I think I pay around CHF 350 a year in canton Zurich.

Are you sure it's calculated via weight? At least in Aargau, the tax is based on engine capacity.¨

EDIT : Just checked and you are of course correct that in BL it's done by weight. I understand the logic that heavier vehicles cause more wear on the roads but I think I prefer the motor capacity version. (i.e. gas guzzlers and Canadian Dudes taxed more)

In Bern, it's also according to weight.

I'm reasonably pleased that here in BL it's calculated by weight- lots of power + light weight = fun
