I'm jipped. I thought if i searched on the German sites they would be cheaper then here but noo. The cars are still 5-10k gbp cheaper in the UK. Forget the left hand drive, I'll just go to blighty and get one..
Maybe you should also ask for UK salary and UK level of public transport and UK health care and anything else for that matter.

Just wondered what you guys think about this, as everytime I start looking at cars and their prices and start comparing to the UK prices for almost identical cars (apart from the steering being on the RHS) I find them to be a lot more expensive, I mean i'm not talking about a few hundred franks here and there, it's almost double the price!!! given the current exchange rate, and if I use GBPCHF @ 2.4 say it doesn't help neither it is still about CHF2000 to CHF3000 for a car that say costs around CHF15000.

any thoughts? I have lots of examples, and it's putting me off buying a car here completely!
When comparing UK to CH prices you need to factor in that the credit crisis hasn't had such a significant impact in Switzerland (yet) - new car sales are actually up y-o-y in March. Also the exchange rate distorts the picture quite a bit. Historically, I think, cars have been more expensive in the UK than in CH most of the time.

CH is still much cheaper than many other European countries (e.g., NL, all Scandinavian countries), even used cars in Germany are not much cheaper than in CH. When you look at the US the difference is of course huge - many cars are about twice as expensive in Europe as they are in the US. This is to a large part due to higher taxes in Europe (can be >30% in some countries) and also to the auto manufacturers ripping off European consumers (also the importers such as AMAG take their share).

It often pays off to purchase a car from a high tax country such as Denmark and then import it to CH. There are some car dealers doing that - like Auto Eberhart (google), but they have mostly more expensive cars than what you're looking for as the whole hassle only makes sense if the absolute saving is big enough.

Any price comparisons are pointless when the pound has lost some 40% in value since 2007.

It would also be useful to know if we are talking new or used prices. The OP seems to have switched halfway through this thread...

I'm here hunny :-D

Bargain!!?????
doubt it! 10 years old, 4x4 160k on the clock not sure if miles or kilos, and not registered in switzerland, will probably cost CHF400 to drive back to the Uk and when you take it there you're stuck with it!
would not touch with a barge pole! unless you know a farmer who's after it then I could drive it over and hand over the keys for a small fee :-p

jokes aside... thanks to everyone for contributing..specially the car imports website seems there could be something that could be learned from there.

sorry to the guys who think just because we earn a bit more than we would do if we were back in the Uk or whereever everyone else comes from. I dont think we should pay an additional fee, or be charged more than everyone else does. in fact the reason why I think prices are this high is because people are prepared to pay them! and the people setting the prices are taking advantage of this position! I'd be very happy indeed if people were prepared to pay me more money for goods I produce for the same price just by exporting them to a different country! it's a doddle!

I think i'm going to buy a push bike now, get some excercise instead :-D
anyone have a descent reasonably priced one? :-p

Digging up this old thread in case anyone wants to buy a new car at considerable saving:

Step1: Select a vehicle from https://carwow.de, they run an a reverse auction so you get great discounts without the hassle of haggling.

Step2: Import it to Switzerland through: https://import-butler.ch

For a 100k CHF car, expect to save about 30k CHF from the Swiss list price.
