Biodiesel Production at home

Hi, I am interested in looking at making Biodiesel at home as a hobby. Does anybody on the forum happen to be doing this or might know anyone in Switzerland who does? I'd be very interested in talking to them...

Thanks,

Copes

Dunno about Switzerland, but I know one person who did it in Ukraine, if you are still interested, I can give you a link to the forum he describes everything (you can contact him as-well). It is in Russian.

Re: Biodiesel Production at home

www.greasel.com is one of several U.S. sites discussing it. I have plenty of friends that ran all kinds of crap in their turbo diesel pickup trucks over there.

Here in Swissieland, I am sure it's illegal. Just because ...

UK is illegal as well. HM Customs do not like frying grease burners that much.

You must have so much sentiment for RSA. Check here: http://www.goldenray.co.uk/processors.html

I think you would be better off opening microbrewery or making lekker boerwors or chutney as a hobby.

Unless you pay fuel tax on it, it is illegal and carries a maximum 7 years jail penalty.

Hydrocarbon Oil Duties Act 1979
Hydrocarbon Oil (Payment of Rebates) Regulations 1996
Customs and Excise Management Act 1979
EC Statutory Instrument
Financial Bill / Budget

Starting with Budget 2002 biodiesel has been recognised as fuel - current excise is about GBP 0.34.

I think for whatever reason people don't do that here, but this thread links to an old article about a biodiesel hobbyist in Switzerland:

Biodiesel could ruin your engine unless it was designed/adapted for it. Better check with the vehicle manufacturer.

Re: Biodiesel Production at home

Remember a project at Uni including labs where we made RME(Rape Methyl Ester)/ Environmental diesel....
Not too difficult if I remember right...

To my understanding RME is supposed to work fine in diesel engines in any ratio (mixed with regular diesel). That is how it is used in Sweden, where it is sold as a biofuel for diesel cars. But probalby good to check.
Back home, the RME fuel cost is about the same as for regular diesel, but with a completely different tax set up (hardly any), since it is a biofuel.
Eventhough it is a renewable source, question is how environmental and economical sustainable it is...

Ethanol yes, biodiesel no - well it can clog injectors and stuff, especially on newer models that have tight density standards, but it's less perverse than ethanol.

Re: Biodiesel Production at home

So you want to do something different and innovative in Switzerland. Almost certainly you will need to fill in a lot of paperwork and pay too much money for some sort of nonsense licence.

The you neighbours will phone the police to complain about the noise and the smell.
